W. S. TAYLOR

"FLYING JENNY GETS NEW DOCUMENTATION"

From "The Mannford Eagle, Silver Edition," Mannford, Oklahoma, May 27, 1987

Another name for the Old Mannford "Flying Jenny," along with a detailed description, as given by a spectator, plus a closer date on its building have now come to light.

H. U. Bartlett, editor of the Mannford Enterprise, first wrote of our unique means of transporation in the April 4, 1907 edition of his paper:

"W.S. Taylor is putting up a cable car to use in crossing the Cimarron River. It will carry from two to four passengers and will be propelled by hand power. This will accomodate many who wish to cross the river without a team."

In a later article, published April 25 of the same year, he praised the invention in much greater detail as follows:

"You may talk about the sights of the Yellowstone Park and the many attractions of Delmar Garden, but if you want to experience the greatest treat of your life just go down to the banks of the beautiful Cimarron River and take a ride in W.S. Taylor's 'Flying Dutchman.' He will take you across the river, 200 feet in 2 1/2 minutes free of charge.

"The Flying Dutchman is a trolly car running on a wire cable stretched across the river about 25 feet above the water; on each side of the banks are a flight of steps leading to the platform where one enters the car. This is Mr. Taylor's own invention and with the assistance of his neighbors was erected for the accomodation of the public. And they certainly deserve a great deal of credit and when this is completed will be one of the greatest inventions of the age."
