GILBERT WESLEY "BUDDY" ALLEN
From the "News Journal," Mannford, Oklahoma, February 26, 1986

"MUSICIAN BUDDY ALLEN BURIED MONDAY" by Connie Smith

Gilbert Wesley Allen, better known as "Buddy," passed away at the age of 48 last Friday at Okmulgee of an apparent heart attack.

Services were conducted Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Okmulgee First Baptist Church.

Buddy was born in Amory, Miss. He had been an employee of the city of Okmulgee for the past 11 years. He was also a member of the Okmulgee Elks Lodge and the Midwest City Moose Lodge.

A country musician, Buddy formed and had been the leader of the Big Buddy Allen Band since 1970. The band played private parties, clubs, county fairs, and small town festivals, including Mannford's Annual Striped Bass Festival, since 1983.

Buddy and his band were asked one week before the 1983 Festival to play, because another band had cancelled out at the last minute. They played free of charge and during a storm. A rain storm accompanied by lots of thunder and lightning prevailed over the first hour and a half of the band's performance, but like the true professionals they are, the band played on.

In 1984, because of a lack of communication, Buddy was also asked to "pull the Festival out of a jam" at the last minute. He did, and again for free. By now the Striped Bass Festival had taken the band and its soft spoken leader to their hearts. But more importantly, he had taken the Festival to his heart. It wasn't until the 1985 Festival that the Big Buddy Allen Band received any compensation for performing at Mannford's Striped Bass Festival, and that amount barely paid for their gasoline to the Festival. But as always at the end of his performance Buddy said, "I sure had a good time Connie, I'll see you next year."

Buddy Allen is survived by his wife, Mary, and three sons, Gilbert, Jeff and Joe, all of the home; one daughter, Angelia McCall of Okmulgee; and one grandson, Joshua McCall.

His passing will leave a void in the hearts of everyone who knew him.
