--------------------

From the "News Journal," Mannford, Oklahoma, October 7, 1987

"A TRIBUTE TO ROY COPELAND, SR."

The following letter was given to us by Dona Smith following the death of Roy Copeland on October 1, 1987. We would like to run it again as it did in 1976.

Dear Editor:

I am enclosing a short tribute to a man I believe to be a true rarity in these times. I know I am only reflecting the views of everyone who knows Roy D. Copeland. I have been privileged to know him for but ten short years and I know there are citizens of Creek County who have known him for fifty years or more.

Obituaries are fine, but it seems to me that they fall far short of an honest compliment to a person who is still living and in complete control of all his senses. Roy Copeland is the kind of man who loves people and I believe it would make him very happy if we were to tell him how much we love and appreciate him for the years of honest service and compassionate treatment he has given us.

"A TRIBUTE TO A FRIEND"

Most of us have had at least one personal experience which has affected our lives to the extent that we feel compelled to relate the experience to our closest friend, our spouse or our parents.

Well, I've revealed this experience to my wife, my sons, my daughters and many of my friends and acquaintences. I still have a compulsion to tell everyone and I've taken this approach to satisfy the compulsion. I want to tell the people of Creek County about a wonderful man that lives among them. I want to tell them about my neighbor, R.D. "Roy" Copeland.

Roy and my own father were born on March 16th. Roy in 1891 in Louisiana and my father in 1885 in Montana. I lost my father on Christmas Day, 1943. I found my father's smile, his goodness and his companionship again when I met Roy Copeland in August, 1966.

In July, 1966, I bought eighty acres on the Cimarron inlet to the Keystone Reservoir. I found the rustic, rolling terrain and foliage of the area very appealing and a real departure from the forests of marble and granite which make up Washington, D.C., from whence I had just come. I wanted to get back to the soil again and I wanted my younger son of ten to participate in the development of the land. I had no idea at the time that our biggest harvest would be the friendship of our new neighbors on the Cimarron -- Roy Copeland and his wonderful wife, Ottie.

During the ensuing ten years there have been countless opportunities to observe Roy's lifestyle and the ways he treats others.

I watched him successfully overcome the sorrow and lonliness brought about by the loss of his wife and constant companion. Ottie's death occurred shortly after his decision to retire from public life as County Commissioner, District 2, Creek County. Her death nullified all of their post retirement plans and created an awesome void in his life. His character, faith and fortitude served him well and he came through those trying days in a manner befitting a person twenty or thirty years his junior.

I continue to renew my faith in humanity as a result of his friendship. I have seen others respond to and emulate his Christian ways. He truly lives by the "Golden Rule" and his conduct "rubs off" on his associates.

Roy will be 86 years old on March 16. I know few of 86 years who can match his mental alertness and physical condition. He allowed me to see the written medical report he received from his physician in Tulsa after his last annual physical examination. Penciled in after the signature block were the following words, "It is a pleasure to associate with such a distinguished gentleman. I don't know what you have been doing through the years, but whatever it is, keep it up."

I hope this letter is published because I know there are hundreds - yes, thousands - of people in Creek County who feel as I do. I want to say it for all of us and I want to say it now! Thank you, Roy. Thank you for being what most of us would really like to be -- an honest, kind and compassionate human being. We love you!
