In Loving Memory of our Mother and Grandmother, Louise Smith.
Dear Grandpa,
I just received word about a great loss for the world. For the world needs a lot more people who have as much total faith, love and devotion for God as your wife and my grandmother had.
I am deeply grateful to the Lord for him putting people like you and her on this earth and especially for having you and grandma as my mother's parents. For only in this manner was it possible for me to reap the benefits that God wanted me to have.
Grandpa, I love Louise as only a grandson can, in that I was exposed to a lot of her personalities and attitudes about life. But I only accepted the Christmas sugar cookies, her delicious green beans and the little gifts that meant so much to all the grandchildren every Christmas. I took for granted all the hugs, kisses and love which I never gave a thought to the fact that someday the physical love given from this lady would end. This is the innocence and wisdom of a child. For I also knew and have taken for granted that my grandmother was someday going to Heaven. (As uncle Charlie once put it, "that lady has a guaranteed seat.") And in order for me to receive more of her love, I have to reserve my own seat. Just as I believe my mother and both my sisters have.
For this is the legacy which lives in the Smith family: It's not fame and fortune by material standards but riches and rewards far greater and available only through belief and faith in God. The Smith legacy isn't the family reunions, the family gatherings at Christmas and Thanksgiving. It's the loving, hugging and kissing that goes on at these gatherings. It's the common belief in God which bonds the Smith family together. Grandma's undying devotion to God is her greatest gift to her children and her children's children.
I am extremely fortunate to have seen a family whose common bond was/is greed. Greed for the material items, greed for their own false pride. The result of this common bond has been almost complete disintegration of some families.
I was praying to God to take Grandma. I could not understand what his purpose was for letting her suffer. What need or event needed to occur before he would accept her. I still don't know. I do know however, that God has once again entered my heart and this could have been the purpose. But it doesn't matter because I know he doesn't intend for me to understand nor is it my place to question. Only to deal with what is at hand and leave the results up to God.
I've really had a difficult time with the Serenity Prayer until I consciously thought of what I was praying for. God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.
I interpret -- God, please grant me -- (not God did grant me) the serenity to accept the things I cannot change -- (things being life and the people, with all their short comings, in it.) The courage to change the things I can -- (the only thing I can change is me) and the wisdom to know the difference.
I've also added an additional line, since for this has been the toughest for me to understand or accept.
Thy will, not mine, be done.
I will always be your very grateful and thankful grandson.
Printed in Mrs. Smith's honor by her children Iris Ann, Margaret, Ruth, Billie and Tom, as they remember and miss her on Mother's Day, 1986.
Mrs. Louise Smith was born January 8, 1905, and departed from this life May 24, 1985.
