FORREST MCCUISTON
Official Verdict Still Pending in McCuiston Death

From "The Jenks Journal," Thursday, October 30, 1958

An official verdict in the bomb death of Forrest McCuiston, 36-year-old Jenks-Tulsa man, was still awaited this week, amost 2 weeks after he was blasted fatally at the Wichita, Kans., municipal airport.

Wichita authorities say the death was suicide, but it has not been officially recorded as such.

A coroner's jury met the day after the explosion to view McCuiston's body. It did not reach a verdict and has been in recess ever since. The jury has been awaiting a call by Coroner Dean Bratt to check final evidence and render an official verdict.

Bratt, Wichita Police Chief Eugene Pond, said, is awaiting final reports from the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington which sent investigators to the scene of the explosion.

Wichita authorities in arriving at their unofficial suicide decision pointed out that baggage weight comparisons indicate McCuiston carried the bomb or its ingredients on his western aerial tour from Wichita to Denver, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Nev., Phoenix and Kansas City and back to Wichita.

They said fragments of a flashlight-type battery, wire and an electric blasting cap were found on and near McCuiston's body.

ALANA MERCHANT
From "The Jenks Journal," Thursday, July 26, 2001

"TEEN KILLED IN MONDAY ACCIDENT"
By Dee Duren, Glenpool Post Editor

Tuesday would have been Alana Merchant's one year anniversary at the Reasor's Food Store in Jenks. The 16-year-old had just been promoted from checker to the position of office clerk, according to manager Eric Neel.

Instead, the Jenks High School student was killed in a car accident just before noon on Monday. She was a passenger in a car driven by friend and fellow Reasor's employee, Melissa Evans, 16, of Glenpool.

The girls were traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 75, according to Det. Don Selle of the Jenks Police Department. Police are hoping to speak to the driver of a black sports car that may have played a role in the accident.

"Apparently this sports car had passed her on the inside lane, pulled in front of her and slowed down real quick," said Steele. "From witnesses it appeared that he hit his brakes as soon as he passed. She probably thought she was going to hit him and took evasive action."

The Glenpool teen, driving a red 1990 Dodge Avenger, went off the road to her left into the center median.

"When she came back onto the road, she went under a flatbed semi-truck trailer," Selle said. Patrolman Eugene Schoonover who worked the accident for the JPD, said estimated speed at collision was 45 mph.

Merchant was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which happened just under the 96th Street bridge. Evans was transported by EMSA to Hillcrest Hospital. No information on her condition was available at press time.

Police would like to speak to the driver of the black, two-door sports car, Selle said. The driver was wearing a baseball cap backwards.

"We'd like to know what happened," said the detective. "We'd like his side of the story and what happened."

Reasor's employees are having a hard time accepting the death of their young co-worker, according to Neel.

"She was a real caring and smart girl," he said of Alana Merchant. "She was really excited about being with us a year, and she liked her job. A lot of times that's unusual for a kid; they don't take their job as seriously as she did," Neel said.

"She was being promoted for her caring attitude and hard work ethic."
