     A newspaper published in Palestine in Anderson County, The Eastern Texas News (also referred to as The East Texas News), was edited by Edwin F. OVERALL. Reproduced below is the list of early Texas veterans, which appears on page 3 of the 23 April 1881 (Volume VI, Number 10) issue. Information is verbatim except for the omission of some conjunctions for style conformity. A copy of the issue is available for free online at the Portal to Texas History website at https://texashistory.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metapth235672 . The website is a great resource for historical and genealogical research. (In this column, surnames on the roll are capitalized for emphasis. Some punctuation or other capitalization may be added for clarity.)

     John C. WOLLAM, now of Palestine; came to Texas in 1837 and served in Burleson’s brigade in 1837-8; Methodist minister; aged 68.

     A.J. HITCHCOCK, now of Caldwell; native of Georgia; came to Texas in 1835; served in Fannin’s command from 1836 to 1841; escaped from massacre at Goliad; age 67.

     D. COOPER, now of Alano (sic) County; native of South Carolina; came to Texas in 1836; served in Fannin’s command from 1836 to 1841; escaped from massacre at Goliad; age 66. (Editor’s note: Alano is probably a misprint for Llano).

     Wm Young Lacy, now of Palestine; came to Texas in 1830; served in Robins command from 1832 to 1841 as lst lieutenant; was in the battle of Nacodoches (sic), Aug. 2d, 1831; age 66. (Editor’s note: Wm. was an abbreviation for William.)

     Hat (?) MITCHELL, now of San Antonio; native of Pennsylvania; came to Texas in 1822; served under Col. Ed. Burleson in 1836 at Ranchero; age 64. (Editor’s note: First name is faint and hard to read.)

     J. L. TRUEHEART, now of San Antonio; native of Virginia; came to Texas in 1838; served under Chancey Johnson; made prisoner at San Antonio, Sept. 11th, 1842.

     Willis BRUCE, now of Bell County; native of Tennessee; came to Texas in 1835; served in Green’s command in 1836 at Victorio; age 68.

     Jno POLLAN, now of Lagarto; native of North Carolina; came to Texas in 1834; served under Capt. Phil Dimits (sic) at Goliad, in 1835; age 65. (Editor’s note: Jno. was an abbreviation for John.)

     F. L. PASCHAL, now of San Antonio; native of Georgia; came to Texas in 1836; served in Green’s brigade in 1836-7; age 71.

     A. B. DODSON, now of Live Oak County; native of North Carolina; came to Texas in 1826; served under Capt. Eberly at Ranchero, Oct. 1st, 1835, and rendered service in 1836; age 74.

      John M. HENSLEY, now of Hamilton County; native of Tennessee; came to Texas in 1823; served in Burleson’s division at the battle of San Jacinto in 1836; age 75.

     P. R. PIENER, now of Bryan; native of North Carolina; came to Texas in 1836; served in Fulton’s regiment in 1836; age 67.

     Robt. JOHNSON, now of Brazos County; native of Virginia; came to Texas in 1839; served under Somerville in 1842; age 63. (Editor’s note: Robt was an abbreviation for Robert.)

     H. MITCHELL, now of Brazos County; native of Tennessee; came to Texas in 1839; served under E. Chandler and in frontier service, 1840-41-42-43 (sic); age 60.
