When we celebrate the birthday of American independence every year, we often forget that veterans of the Revolution faced problems afterwards. One facet is brought to light in PENSIONERS OF REVOLUTIONARY WAR STRUCK OFF THE ROLL, a 103-page volume with soft covers.

This book is a reprint of an U. S. War Department document that lists the names of approximately 6,000 pensioners of the Revolutionary War who were disqualified but later restored to the pension roll. The material is arranged alphabetically by state and thereunder by pensioners' names which are not in "strict" alphabetical order. For each claimant the roster identifies the date of the act under which his pension was restored.

Additional remarks about some claimants may pertain to their expulsion or reinstatement. Joel FOX of New York, for example, was restored as an invalid under the Act of 1 May 1820 while Valentine SILLCOCKS of New Jersey and Abel WILDER of Massachusetts lost their pension because they were not in needy circumstances. Genealogical collections with military records focusing on America's fight for independence from England will be incomplete without a copy of PENSIONERS OF REVOLUTIONARY WAR STRUCK OFF THE ROLL.

Charles N. Ferguson, 811 South Market, Shawnee, OK 74801 is seeking information about John P. FERGUSON, born about 1821 in Tennessee. He came to Texas prior to July, 1848, and is listed on the 1850 Grayson County census with one child. Charles also needs data on John P. from the censuses from 1860 through 1880. In addition, he seeks information about Abijah V. HARRIS, formerly of Ardmore, OK, who died in 1918 in Ennis, TX.

Ms. S. McClenny, 2036 S. Bowie, Amarillo, TX 79109 (e-mail [email protected]) needs the names of the parents and siblings of Kalley WHITSON of Blount Co., TN, who married John Talley LANE. John and Kalley had a daughter, Bealuah (sic) Reperta (sic) LANE, who married a McCLENNY.

Bonnie Bright Johannes, 5594 North 10th, Apt. 103, Fresno, CA 93710-6586 (e-mail: [email protected]) would appreciate information about Anegal (sic) HOLT, age 14, who is listed in the household of George SHELTON on page 654 of the 1850 Lauderdale Co., AL, census. Johannes has SHELTON and HOLT lines in Lauderdale County, but she has not been able to connect these two people with them. Bonnie would also appreciate a copy of the 1850 census for her files.

Helen Priestly of Dalhart, TX, writes that she has enjoyed listening to family stories for years. She would like to suggest that pedigree charts be made for residents in nursing homes. Even if the chart is just a rough sketch, it may provide information that may never be obtained otherwise.
