This week we will conclude selected information from the 14 June 1929 (Volume 1, number 2) issue of the Gospel Herald, published in San Antonio, Texas. (Surnames are capitalized for emphasis. Some punctuation may be added or changed for clarity.) The first two items appear in the column, “From the Harvest Fields,” on page 15.

“Brother R. R. BROOKS, who closed his work at Abilene last Sunday is now in a meeting with the San Marcos church.”

Brother Hatton B. GIST of San Antonio wrote: ‘The Victoria meeting resulted in three baptisms. Brother EVERIDGE had charge of the song service and did it well.

My last meeting was at Rock Island with one baptism. While there, I was in the home of sister (sic) GOODELL who went to school to (sic) President GARFIELD and tells me that she heard him preach many times. President Garfield stood for primitive Christianity, agreeing with most every principle for which we plead today.

I go to Crystal City next.’

An article about Abilene Christian College’s annual commencement, which mentions three individuals, can be found on page 2. “Brother W. F. LEDLOW of Austin delivered the commencement address....” The piece states that the “baccalaureate sermon was delivered Sunday, June 3, by Brother Walter H. ADAMS, who graduated from Abilene Christian College in June 1925.” At the evening service on June 3, “Brother Batsell BAXTER, president of A. C. C. [Abilene Christian College], filled the pulpit, bringing an inspiring lesson from the life of Solomon.”

Page 11 – An article about the Bible in public schools includes the names of two people: Mr. A. B. J. MOORE, Secretary of the Christian Commercial Traveler’s Association, and Mrs. James E. CALDWELL, President of the Review Club in Nashville, Tennessee.

Page 13 – “Arkansas Christian Home, 1822 Jenny Lind, Fort Smith, Arkansas, is perhaps the newest Orphan Home being supported by disciples (sic) of Christ. Brother Jas. E. LAIRD is the Superintendent and reports that the work is going forward nicely....”

These items below appear in the section, “Office Editor’s Page,” on page 14.

“The designs used as the headings of our departments were drawn by Miss Edna M. COBB, a member of the Denver Heights church of Christ (sic)....

We have several hundred copies of Rhyming Thoughts, a book of inspiring poems by Edna Busby FERGUSON....

Ideal Womanhood by Mrs. Jesse P. SEWELL continues to sell rapidly...

We recommend Bible Studies for Young People by Morgan H. CARTER for Junior High School classes....

A short article is titled “The Sewell Press,” which mentions several members of a prominent family. “It is the desire of those connected with The Sewell Press to build up a publishing house that will be a credit to the cause of Christ in Texas and the entire south (sic). When the question of a name for this publishing house came up for discussion, Brother FOWLER insisted that it be named The Sewell Press. Bro. SEWELL at first would not hear of it, but with much persuasion gave his consent...” The article also states that “...this name is peculiarly appropriate not only because of the signal service rendered to the brotherhood in Texas by Jesse P. SEWELL, but because of the work of a long line of Sewells....” Besides Jesse P. SEWELL, individuals named are Jesse L. SEWELL, E. G. SEWELL, W. M. SEWELL of Abilene, and “the late” C. W. SEWELL of Corpus Christi.
