If you are tracing ancestors along the boundary between the Old Dominion State and the Tar Heel State, you may be interested in Blanche Adams Chapman's WILLS AND ADMINISTRATIONS OF SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VIRGINIA, 1749 - 1800. The reprint by Clearfield Company is a facsimile of the 1980 Genealogical Publishing Company publication in which Chapman's original two mimeographed volumes, published in 1947 and 1958 respectively, were consolidated, re-typed, and re-indexed.
Containing data from the first five volumes of the Virginia county's will books, Chapman's abstracts of Southampton's wills and administrations cover the years 1749 - 1800--the first fifty years of the county's existence as an independent entity. Arranged more or less in chronological order by the name of the deceased, the documents usually provide the name of the testator (person making the will), names of legatees (which often show relationships), summaries of the bequests, date of the will and its recording, and the page number of the original will book where the full contents of the will can be found. Administration records generally give the dates of the inventory and appraisal, names of auditors and appraisers, and references regarding the settlement of the estate.
The approximately 2,500 wills and administrations refer to about 8,000 individuals. Created in 1749 from the counties of Isle of Wight and Nansemond, Southampton County is situated just above the North Carolina border.
