     This week we continue to present some more selected items found in the “Society” column of the 15 February 1940 issue of the Shelby County newspaper, Center Daily News, published in Center, Texas. (Surnames are capitalized for emphasis. Some punctuation may be changed for clarity.)

     Page 4 – Happenings mentioned in a column from the Arcadia community:

     “The changeable weather is causing people to have colds and there has been some flu scattered around in the community.

     Miss Edna PATTERSON spent a few days with her friend, Miss Wynell POWDRILL.

     Mr. and Mrs. Van HUGHES and children visited Mr. and Mrs. Bart HUGHES, Sunday.

     Miss Juanita POWDRILL, who is attending Center High School, spent the weekend with her aunt, Mrs. Al SMITH.

     Mr. and Mrs. Byron PATTERSON and little daughter, Judith Ann, visited Mr. and Mrs. Elbert PATTERSON, Sunday. We regret to report that Mr. and Mrs. Elbert PATTERSON have moved from our community.

     Mrs. Tom MAHAN visited her daughter, Mrs. Harold FRANKS, Monday.

     Mr. R. J. POWDRILL, who has been staying with his uncle, Mr. Jim HARRIS, has returned home.

     Mr. and Mrs. Byron PATTERSON and daughter spent two days with Mrs. Patterson’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. E. HOLLOWAY, last week.

     We are sorry to report that Mr. Jack EMANIS, who has been ill for some time, is not improving.”

     Also on page 4 are events which appeared in a column from the Magnolia community:

     “Mrs. Colman COLLINS is the guest of Mrs. Dora BIGGARS in Center this week.

     Friends of Mrs. Weaver BRITTAIN will be glad to hear that she is improving. She is with her...” (Editor’s note: Although the rest of sentence is omitted, it is apparently the partial sentence printed elsewhere in the column.) “...daughter, Mrs. Theron BRITTAIN of Center.

     Mr. and Mrs. Tom WILSON of Shelbyville were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Reece WILSON, Sunday.

     Mr. Will JONES of Ballard was the guest of Mr. Nolan CHESHIRE, Saturday night.

     Miss Joy BRITTAIN is spending the week with her aunt, Mrs. Hugh MONROE of Shelbyville.

     Mr. Belver HAGLER of Shreveport is spending a few days with his father, Mr. Will HAGLER.”

     Advertisements on page 2 include one for H. B. JOHNSON, “the insurance man,” and Parker Brothers Motor Co., owned by James PARKER and Heber PARKER.

     Classified ads also appear on page 2.

     “Notice – Dan CHANDLER and Roy SELLERS are now located at my shop—next door to 3 Beall Brothers Store...Powers Barber Shop.

     For sale or trade – Model 5 Woodstock typewriter, first class condition. Will sell cheap or trade for anything of equal value. Benis MEEKS, at Drew Middleton’s.

     For sale – Range stove perfect condition. See J. W. BRIDGES, five miles north of Center.

    For sale – 1931 Chevrolet, coach (sic), radio, in good condition. See Paul CORBITT.

     For sale – 7-room house and brick building. See R. N. BEACHAM.
