This week we continue the list the names of members of the Carthage (Texas) Chapter for 1878-1879. The data can be found on page 85 of TRANSACTIONS OF THE M. E. GRAND ROYAL ARCH CHAPTER OF TEXAS AT ITS THIRTIETH ANNUAL CONVOCATION HELD AT THE MASONIC TEMPLE, IN THE CITY OF HOUSTON, ON THURSDAY, THE ELEVENTH DAY OF DECEMBER, A. D. 1879, A. I. 2409, AT THREE O’CLOCK P. M., which was published in Houston by W. H. Coyle, Printer and Lithographer, in 1880. (In the title, the M and E are each followed by three dots, representing the Triple Tau emblem of the organization. However, for simplicity, a period is used in this column.      Editor’s note: If you refer back to Kinsearching columns dated 14 July 2013 and 21 July 2013, you will notice that some of the same names are listed in the Carthage and Center chapter rosters. H./Haston TWOMEY and Snider SAMFORD are two examples. In addition, a few of the men were Freemasons at some point. For instance, Snider SAMFORD was a member of several different chapters of the Freemasons in Shelby County, Texas. A member of the Golden Drain Lodge in Timpson, Texas, A. R. DILLEN/DILLON was also a Freemason. Other men may have been members of Royal Arch chapters or Freemason lodges in nearby counties like San Augustine.

The book, FREEMASONRY IN SHELBY COUNTY, TEXAS, 1846-1900, by William Tellis Parmer (Center, Texas: The Offset Press, 1965) provides information about Royal Arch Masonry as well as data about the various Freemason lodges in that East Texas county. Parmer’s work includes rosters of members, the offices they held, and the years they were members of a particular lodge or chapter. Additional material such as the date the man was dimitted or died may also appear for some individuals.
