If any of your ancestors came from the Volunteer State, you may be interested in the Family Tree Maker's Family Archives CD, Tennessee Marriages, 1787-1866. The CD reproduces images of the pages of more than twenty books, most of which were compiled by Edythe Whitley.

Encompassing the era after the end of the American Revolution through the end of the Civil War, this collection of Tennessee records was gleaned from marriage registers and original bonds and licenses scattered among loose papers in county courthouses. (Genealogists should keep in mind that a marriage bond meant that a marriage was “intended” to take place and sometimes it never occurred.) Although the dates covered by the records vary from county to county, most documents include the names of the couple, date of the marriage or the marriage bond, and the names of the person performing the ceremony and bondsman. Occasionally, miscellaneous annotations, such as name of parent or guardian, appear on the documents. Since bondsmen were often relatives, their names may provide clues for further family connections. If the officiant was a minister, the denomination to which he belonged may indicate the religious preference of the bride and/or groom.

Included on the CD are marriage records for the following counties: Anderson, 1838-1858; Blount, 1795-1859; Campbell, 1838-1853; Claiborne, 1838-1850; Davidson, 1789-1847; Gibson, 1824-1860; Grainger, 1796-1837; Jefferson, 1783-1836; Lawrence, 1818-1854; Maury, 1808-1852; McMinn, 1821-1864; Rhea, 1808-1859; Roane, 1801-1838; Robertson, 1839-1861; Rutherford, 1804-1872; Shelby, 1820-1858; Stewart, 1838-1866; Sumner, 1787-1838; Washington, 1787-1840; White, 1809-1859; Williamson, 1804-1850; and Wilson, 1802-1850.

Because all of the material, which pertains to approximately 278,000 people, can be accessed by a single consolidated index, the CD is a real “time-saver” for researchers. Due its easy usage and small amount of storage space, genealogists tracing forebears in the Volunteer State will want to get a copy of Tennessee Marriages, 1787-1866 for their personal library.

To the CD's price of $29.99, buyers should add the cost for postage and handling charges. For U. S. postal mail, the cost is $5.50 for one CD and $2.50 for each additional copy; for FedEx ground service, the cost is $7.50 for one copy and $2.50 for each additional CD. The CD (item order #7407) may be purchased by check, money order, MasterCard, or Visa from Clearfield Company, 3600 Clipper Mill Rd., Suite 260, Baltimore, Maryland 21211-1953.
