This week we furnish miscellaneous data from selected advertisements in the December 1923 (Volume 3, Number 2) issue of The Cumberland Alumnus. The periodical was published by the Alumni Association of Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee. (Surnames are capitalized for emphasis. Some punctuation may be changed for clarity.)
A three-quarters-page advertisement by Cumberland University concerns bonds to aid in funding the school. Leaders for synods and presbyteries for the fund drive were the following:

Anyone wishing to donate could send a check to President John Royal HARRIS in Lebanon, Tennessee.
An ad for Shannon’s Drug Store in Lebanon provided
these details: “When in need of drugs, fine stationery, toilet articles,
fountain pens, [and] sundries, you will do well to buy of J. L. SHANNON, a
supporter of the Alumnus and a life-long friend of the University.”
The town of Lebanon placed a half-page ad, touting the
various strengths of the area. A advantages included the second best cedar
market in the world; the second best shipping point of its size in the state;
one of the best markets for dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, wool, hogs,
horses, and mules; the best county fair in the state, and eleven miles of
concrete streets and pavements; hydro-electric power; and two railroads.
People mentioned in the ad were
C. M. MATHIS, President of Castle Heights Military Academy;
Harry COOK, President of the Rotary Club;
W. D. FERRELL, President of the Exchange Club; and
Edward GRAHAM, President of the Round Table.
The Inter-State Ice and Coal Co., Incorporated, of
Lebanon, had an ad stating: “Manufacturers of ice, wholesale and retail,
capacity fifty tons.”
