     This week we have selected items found in the 5 July 1934 issue (Volume 6, Number 29) of the Shelby County newspaper, Center Daily News, published in Center, Texas. (Surnames are capitalized for emphasis. Some punctuation may be changed for clarity.)

     Front page:

     “Ned BARRETT of Gilmer, who will manage the Three (sic) Beall Bros. store in Center when they open on August 1st, was a caller in the city Wednesday and was a very pleasant visitor to the News-Champion office.

     Mr. Barrett told the News reporter that he was sure that he would be well pleased with the city and that he would probably be here next week to begin work on the building.

     Mr. Barrett was accompanied on the trip Wednesday by his wife and children.


     Announcement appearing in this paper a few days ago stated that a cemetery working would be held at the Carroll Cemetery on July 10th has been changed. The date is now Tuesday, July 17th, according to Tyne CARROLL. Mr. Carroll has urged a big attendance at the meeting.


     The Sam Samford Lodge No. 149 will hold its meeting at the Masonic Hall here Saturday night, July 7, at 8 p. m., Jeff SAMFORD announced today. Mr. Samford has urged a full attendance of all members as work in the Masters Degree will be taken up and a cordial invitation to all visiting brethren has been extended.


     Post Adjutant Meyer SIMON announced that the Norman G. Crocker Post of the American Legion would meet in regular session here tonight at 8 p. m. at the Chamber of Commerce offices. All members are urged to attend this meeting.


     W. F. LEWALLEN and mother, Mrs. J. M. McDOWELL, are spending a few days in Fort Worth, visiting friends and relatives.


     Mrs. J. H. McCAULEY, age 59, died at her residence in the Pine Grove residence Tuesday after a lingering illness.

     Mrs. McCauley was well known and loved throughout the community in which she resided. She had been a resident of the county her entire life. She leaves a host of friends and relatives that will mourn her demise. Funeral rites were conducted Wednesday afternoon at the Short Cemetery with Rev. Joe BAKE (sic) officiating.

     Mrs. McCauley is survived by one daughter, Nora, and two sons, Robert and Noah, all of the Pine Grove community, and one brother, W. W. KIMBRO.


     Homer HAWTHORN, local Sinclair agent, stated that he is in receipt of booklets, concerning research work of (sic) dinosaurs that are to be distributed to the school in the county. Mr. Hawthorn stated that these booklets may be obtained by either calling at the station in Center or writing in.


     One of the largest crowds ever to gather on the courthouse lawn is expected here Friday night, July 6th, at 8 p. m. when former Governor James E. FERGUSON will address the voters of Shelby County in (sic) behalf of the candidacy of C. C. McDONALD for governor....” Another noted speaker was to be John WOOD, Chairman of the State Highway Commission.

     A separate announcement issued to “Ladies” invited them to a tea on the “spacious lawn of the W. A. BRIDGES home Friday evening” from five to six. The tea was in honor of ex-Governor Ferguson and Commissioner Wood.
