for A WORTHY CAUSE It has recently come to my attention that a site important to both clans AND the history of Scotland has been cut off from public access and may ultimately be lost to us forever. The site of which I speak is the Alter site of the Old Greyfriars Church in Dumfries, the site where Robert the Bruce and Sir Roger Kirkpatrick jointly “dispatched” the treacherous John “the Red” Comyn on 10 February 1306, who brought challenge to Robert The Bruce’s claim to the Scottish Throne. The building has been boarded up and access is denied to all except those who may wish to purchase or rent the building. A true tragedy for the Bruces, Kirkpatricks and all of Scotland. The following is from The Bruce Trust The Trust has just embarked on its most ambitious project so far. A shop on Castle Street in Dumfries, the old Poundstretcher store, is currently empty. This shop sits on the site of the 14th century Friary where the Comyn slaying took place. In 1902 the Dumfries and Galloway Antiquarian Society was behind an archaeological dig on the site when nine shops were demolished and they found what was widely agreed to be the altar stone that Bruce and Comyn would have been standing close to on that fateful Thursday in 1306. To add to the evidence, two skeletons were found close to the stone but not touching it and they were thought to be that of Comyn and his uncle. Obviously this would be an ideal site for a visitor centre marking what was a history shaping event and celebrating the life of King Robert. Agents have indicated they might well be happy to let us have it. But we need to find finances, and quickly. Such buildings are rarely available for long. The Trust is obviously trying to raise funds but we are also appealing for donations and we hope you can help. Please go to our Donations page and follow the instructions. AND We are actively in seeking finance for such a venture which will be an expensive exercise and we need as much help as we can possibly get. If you are interested in our project and would like to be involved, please send your donations You also email us at [email protected] if you have any questions. ( If you TRULY are proud of your Kirkpatrick & Scottish heritage, go to the donation link in the above article and give money to save the I MAK SIKKAR site. I just donated £50.00 GBP./$76 US I challenge all other K' descendants to do the same....Tom) |
I am starting this as a Free RESEARCH and INFORMATION SHARING SITE and ask only that interested individuals "join" or take out a "membership" by emailing me at Kirk.KilClans[at]yahoo.com AND that members MUST be actively researching either the Kirkpatrick or Kilpatrick families.
Members are expected to submit their family trees by emailing me their GEDCOM that has at least 3 generations of either Kirkpatrick or Kilpatrick ancestors. These trees will be organized in family groups and/or places of residence and displayed as descendants charts that will be open for all to browse (if you don't want living individuals to be viewed, be sure to list them only as "LIVING" without dates.) Be sure to tell me about the oldest known Kirkpatrick/Kilpatrick ancestor in your email. CLICK TO SUBMIT YOUR GEDCOM(Links to creating a GEDCOM on ANCESTRY.COM, FAMILY TREE MAKER, Brother's Keeper, Family Origins, Family Tree Maker, Generations, Legacy Family Tree, Personal Ancestral File (PAF), Reunion, RootsMagic, The Master Genealogist & Ultimate Family Tree on RootsWeb.com)
Queries should be submitted by email. Be sure to include YOUR NAME, your Kirkpatrick/Kilpatrick ANCESTOR(s) NAMES, Place(s) of RESIDENCE, and what you WANT TO LEARN.
