Deya Alaska
9/4/97

Mrs. E Barton
Mineola Mo

Dear Geo & Jo:
Have not heard from you yet, but have a chance to send this to the office so thought would write. We are 6 miles above Deya and will go to the summit with a boat for an other man, who will pack 1200# for us on horses to Sheep's camp 11 miles we will not get down the river this fall probibly we will go down after it freezes up. It is snowing on the mountains every day but is pleasant down in the valley. I will go through snow tomorrow if we make it to the summit by that time we have been packing our provisions about 5 miles. we (Lee, Frank & I) pack 75# at a pack (Tom 50#. Just think of packing that much without taking it off my shoulders. it surely must be in the climate. the water is the best I ever drank all of the creeks are ice cold & soft just the least soap will make it foam.
Will have to close as the man is waiting.
