Hartley Herald Wednesday June 28, 1899.
Divisions of the Ladies' Aid Society.
At a recent meeting the women of the M. E. church were divided into two lists of equal number and called the "Simpson" and the "Asbury" departments or divsions. It is expected that each division shall alternate in taking charge of the "market" held each Saturday afternoon and evening on Main street.
The following are the names in each division as handed us:

John Kneen had the misfortune to lose his best stallion Monday. This is the third one he has lost since coming to Hartley.

Normal Notes.
The institute opened Monday morning with an enrollment of 128. Many have since arrived.
Prof. Colgrove, of Cedar Falls, holds some very interesting discussions in didactics.
Prof. J. C. Hood, of Hartley, took charge of the grammar classes, beginning Monday by giving a brief history of the English language.
J. H. Wolf conducted devotional exercises Monday morning, reading for scripture lesson the well known Psalm 23.
Miss Korinke has charge of primary work. It is thot the teachers will gain many important facts from her instruction.
Prof. A. V. Storm, of Cherokee, takes charge of the singing each afternoon, following which the teachers enjoy a short lecture by C. P. Colgrove, of Cedar Falls.
Frof. Fobes, of Sutherland, has charge of several classes in geography, arithmetic and algebra. He brot out some very important points in the study and teaching of these branches.
Prof. Simpson, of Sheldon, gave some very valuable and much needed facts on orthography in which both pupils and teachers are quite generally deficient.
Blanche Eaton, Orpha Webster, Jennie Hazlett, Bessie Perry, Anna Elliott, Esther Titus, Anna Kneen, Alice Jones, Miss Minard, Margaret Price, Alta McAndrew, Mina Kroft, Jessie Ebright and Gertie Crossan are attending the institute from Hartley and vicinity.

The Teachers.
The following is a list of teachers in this locality whose schools begin Monday, September 3:
Hartley township--No. 2, Minteer school, Esther Titus; No. 4, Mueller school, Nina Kroft; No. 5, Longbottom school, Bessie Perry; No. 6, Shonkwiler school, Mrs. Della Shonkwiler; No. 7, Steece school, Orpha Webster; No. 8, Worden school, Jennie Hazlett.
Omega township--No. 1, Arthaud school, Blanche Eaton; No. 2, Bruegman school, Gertie Crossan; No. 3, Hopfe school, Anna Kneen.
Lincoln township--No. 7, Haynes school, Jesie Ebright.
Center township--No.1, H.C. Voss school, H.P. Mowrer.

Gary Brown, of Galva, Ill. is in town with his old friends again. He prefers Hartley to Galva and may remain here if business come all right.

Jan. 17, 1900 (Wednesday)
Tied the Knot.
A pleasant wedding occured at the home of Will Kneen northwest of town on Thursday, Jan 11. The contracting parties were Miss Jessie Gosling, sister of Mrs. W. Kneen, and Dr. L. C. Shocky. Both parties are of Mound City, S. D. The doctor has a good practice and we predict a happy future for the young people. The ceremony was preformed by Rev. D. A. McBurney, and only the family of the bride's sister present. They will leave at once for South Dakota.

Mrs. J. Kneen was quite sick the first of this week.

There will be a school sociable and old fashioned spelling school at the Kneen school house north of Hartley on Friday evening, Feb. 9. All ladies are requested to bring along baskets with refreshments sufficient for two persons. The entertainment is for the benefit of the school library. All come.

The spring terms in the country schools have nearly all begun around Hartley. The folowing is a partial list of the teachers: Hartley township; No. 4 Anna Kneen, 5 Luiu Richardson, 6 Mrs. Shonkwiler, 7 Orpha Webster, 8 Jennie Hazlett. Omega Township: 1 Blanche Eaton, 22 Ralph Waldo, 3 Roxie Webster, 6 Gertrude Crossan. Lincoln Township: 1 Bryant Elliott, 5 Bessie Perry, 7 Jessie Ebright.

John Kneen has commenced laying a higher stone foundation under his house.

Miss Anna Kneen is still quite sick.
John Kneen has made a big improvement to his home by building a good wall and cellar.

John Kneen has returned from his trip to Illinois where he ad a good visit with old neighbors and took in the G.A.R. Encampment.

Tom Kneen returned home Monday evening from his trip to South Dakota. He reports crops very good up there.
John Kneen had a fine 4-year-old colt cut in the wire Monday and its foot nearly torn off.
John Kneen returned home Friday evening from his trip to South Dakota. He went as far north as Redfield. He was quite well pleased with the country but has not purchased any land yet, as he thinks the prices are a little high.
