DEATH OF JOHN KNEEN

John Kneen, an old and highly respected citizen, died at his home in Hartley, this (Thursday) morning, of neuralgia of the stomach, after an illness of three weeks. This is indeed another sad blow to the family, three members of which have passed away within a few months. The affliction seems almost too hard to bear, especially for Mrs. Kneen whose health has been very poor for several years. The funeral services will be held in the M.E. church Sunday at 11 o'clock a.m., Rev. O. S. bryan preaching the sermon. The serviecs will be under the auspices of the I.O.O.F. lodge of which the deceased was a member. Al members of the order are requested to meet at the hall at 10 o'clock.

OBITUARY.

John Kneen was born on the Isle of Man, July 5, 1835, and departed this life January 28, 1903, aged 67 years, 6 months, and 23 days. He was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Craine, October 8, 1858. Ten years later, in 1868, they emigrated to America and settled in Illinois, where they resided until their removal to O'Brien county in 1883.

Mr. Kneen united with the M. E. church in Hartley, February 1, 1898, under the pastorate of Rev. F. W. Ginn, and was received into full membership July 31, of the same year. He had received the sacrament of baptism in infancy.

Brother Kneen was converted very late in life, and the formation of new habits and companionships was not as pronounced in his life as it would have been had he been brought to Christ in early life. The unwavering faith that was beyond doubt in his heart, as was clearly proven when he stood face to face with death, did not find in his life as tangible an expression as it otherwise would. This fact in his redeemed life cannot be questioned for one moment: "The presence of Christ and the strength of his grace put into that weakened and depressed life the element of victory. Foes that had triumphed before were held in complete mastery."

When the daughter, who died only a few weeks ago, was passing through the dark valley and shadow, her father exhorted her to ask God for pardon and help, and put her trust in Jesus; assuring her of his ability and readiness to help her. He affirmed his faith in Christ in the last hours of his life. Conscious of the fact that he was approaching the spirit world, his last words were words of prayer, pleading with God for grace and strength for the trying hour. He assured his pastor only a few hours before his death, that all was well, and that his heart was stayed on God. Only a divine Savior can sustain the bereaved hearts in this home out of which has four of the loved ones in less than two years; and into which the death angel has entered three times since early in September. May the God of all comfort cheer and uphold the sorely stricken wife and children.

He leaves to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent husband and father, a wife, three sons and two daughters. The children are: William and Thomas Kneen of Hartley; Ed Kneen of Burbank, South Dakota; Mrs. Thomas Kelly and Rufus McKane, of Galva Illinois.

The funeral services were held from the M. E. church Sunday at 11 o'clock and were conducted by the Hartley I.O.O.F. lodge, of which order the deceased was a member, the sermon being preached by Rev. O.S. Bryan. The services were largely attended and attested the esteem in which Mr. Kneen was held by the people of this community. At the grave the burial services of the order were performed and the remains lowered to their resting place.
