William H. Beers, Kamaaina Attorney, Dies At age Of 69
Hilo, March 14 – William Henry “Billy” Beers, county attorney here for 29 years and a prominent figure in territorial politics and business since 1902, died Thursday afternoon in the Hilo Memorial Hospital, where he was taken early last week following a heart attack. The 69 – year – old attorney grew progressively worse after he entered the hospital until he rallied slightly Thursday morning the suddenly died. His wife and his two sons, William Jr., and Fred, both of Honolulu, were at his bedside.  Funeral services have been set for Saturday afternoon in the Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostle in Hilo. Burial will follow. Born in Honolulu on Nov. 2, 1877, Mr. Beers attended the Kamehameha schools and went to the Big Island as a teacher at Honokaa and Hilo until he entered political life in 1902 and became clerk and interpreter in the South Hilo district court. He married Maude Oliver Hansen on Dec. 19, 1902 and left for the mainland to study law. He received his law degree from the University of Michigan in 1908 and returned to the island of Hawaii in 1909. The same year he became interpreter for the Territorial House of Representatives and ran as a republican for the first time, winning the post of county attorney which he held for 29 consecutive years. Always active in local politics, Mr. Beers served as chairman of both the county and territorial Republican conventions several times. In 1924, he was chosen alternate to the GOP national convention. He served on the boards of directors of several Hilo business firms and once was instrumental in obtaining a franchise for the Hilo Gas Company. For six years he was a second lieutenant in Company “D” of the Hawaii National Guard. His affiliations were. Order of Kamehameha, Hale O Na Alii, Ancient Order of Foresters, Order of Owls, Hilo Country Club, Volcano Golf Club, Hilo Chamber of Commerce and the Hilo Lions Club. Besides his wife and two sons; Mr. Beers is survived by his daughter , Naoma, of Venicia, Calif. – Newpapers.com

Mrs. Maude Beers, Isle Educator, Dies
Mrs. Maude Beers, retired school principal and teacher on the Big Island, died last night at Hilo Hospital at the age of 84. Funeral services are pending. Mrs. Beers, wife of the late William Henry Beers, former County Attorney, retired as principal of Kapiolani School in 1945 after 44 years of teaching here. She was born in Michigan in 1880, and came Hilo, in 1901. She began her teaching career at the Hilo Boarding School, and a year later, became affiliated with the Department of Public Instruction of the Territory where she served until her retirement. Mrs. Beers taught at Kurtistown, Olaa, Kapiolani School and Hilo Union School from 1902 to 1925, serving as vice principal at Hilo Union from 1924-25. She was primary supervisor for East Hawaii District in 1925. From 1926-27, she was principal of Waiakea Waena School, then became principal of Kapiolani School from 1927 until her retirement. Among the organizations which she belonged to were: Member of the managing committee of Hilo Hospital from 1958-64; Holy Apostles Episcopal Church since 1907; Ladies Auxiliary – Veterans of Foreign Wars; American Legion Auxiliary – Hilo Unit No. 3; Intercultural Club; YMCA; YWCA; American National Red Cross; American Heart Association; Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary; Hilo Teachers Association; Hilo Woman’s Club; Hawaii Civil Defense; Republican Party of Hawaii; and the Hawaii Concert Society. When final arrangements are made, memorial services will be held at the Holy Apostles Church. Also, private burial of ashes beside her husband will take place at Homeland Cemetery. She is survived by two sons, William Jr., and Fred, both of Honolulu; a daughter, Mrs. Naomi B. Knight of California; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
