Gen. Livingston SATTERLEE [Parents]-3955 was born on 1 Mar 1839 in New York City, New York, New York. He died on 2 Apr 1902 in New York City, New York, New York. He was buried in Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings, New York. Livingston married Lucina Comstock KNIGHT-1644 on 9 May 1861 in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut.

OBITUARY: New York Daily Tribune Thursday, April 3, 1903
General Livingston Satterlee, who died at this home. No 2 West One-hundred-and-third-st., yesterday, was one of the generals who graduated from the 12th New York Regiment. His military career began when he enlisted as a private in the Marine Artillery of Providence, R. I. Afterward while at Brown University he raised a company called the Brown University Guards. He subsequently received a staff appointment from Governor Sprague of Rhode Island. In 1852 he joined the 3rd Company of the 7th New York Regiment. In 1860 he became a member of Company A. 12th Regiment. On January 25, 1860, he was appointed assistant paymaster of the 12th Regiment by Colonel Butterfield, and served with the regiment in the campaign of 1861, 1862 and 1863, being made paymaster in April 1861, and commissioned Lieutenant Colonel in June, 1862. While Colonel William G. Ward was acting brigadier general in 1862 and 1863, Lieutenant Colonel Satterlee commanded the regiment. He received his commission of brigadier general from Governor Fenton with rank from September 1, 1865, while lieutenant colonel of the 12th Regiment. General Satterlee was a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity, and had served as president of the fraternity for the United States  and Canada. He was also a Mason. He leaves two sons and three daughters.

New York Herald, Thursday, April 3, 1902
Brigadier General Livingston Satterlee, a veteran of the civil war and once prominent in the business world as senior member of the firm of Satterlee, Bostwick & Martin, insurance brokers, died yesterday at his home, No. 2 West 103d street, from a complication of disease. He had been ill several months. He was sixty-two years old. He served as Lieutenant Colonel in the Twelfth regiment during the civil war, and received his commission of Brigadier General from Governor Fenton. After the war he engaged in the insurance business in this city. His firm failed in 1891 under sensational circumstances, it being charged that $150,000 belonging to the Northern Pacific Railroad  had been hypothecated. Members of the firm disappeared, but later returned from Canada, and an investigation by creditors relieved General Satterlee of responsibility for the shortage. He was a thirty-third degree Mason.

Lucina Comstock KNIGHT [Parents]-1644 was born on 23 Aug 1838 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York. She died on 5 Aug 1900 in New York City, New York, New York. Lucina married Gen. Livingston SATTERLEE-3955 on 9 May 1861 in Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut.

MILITARY: Abraham Lincoln Papers at the Library of Congress. Transcribed and Annotated by the Lincoln Studies Center, Knox College. Galesburg,Illinois.
In January of 1862, Mrs. Sylvester R. Knight wrote to President Lincoln concerning the release of her husband from jail in Richmond, Virginia. This a transcription of the endorsment he wrote on a the letter from Mrs. Knight, which was presumably returned . The president's private secretary, John G. Nicolay, has written an explanation of the memorandum just below Lincoln's copy; "Endorsed upon the letter of a lady who wished her husband released from jail at Richmond where he is held prisoner of war. Lt. S.R. Knight 1st R.I. Regt." Notwithstanding the president's discourageing tone, Lieutenant Knight was exchanged and mustered out of the army in January of 1862. The President sympathizes deeply with Mrs. Knight & her husband, and the many others in like condition--but he is sure she does not appreciate the difficulty of what she asks--

BIOGRAPHY: John Hopkins and Some of his Descendants
By Timothy Hopkins
Printed and bound in the United States of America
by Stanford University Press
1932 - Page 325
President Mark, D.D., LL.d. b. at Stockbridge, Massachusetts, 4 February 1802; m. at Williamstown, Massachusetts, 25 December 1832,  Mary Hubbell, b. 12 August 1813, daughter of Lyman N. Hubbell, b. 1768, and Louisa Rossiter, b. at Richmond, Massachusetts, 27 January 1788. (Hubbell Gen., p. 244.) He d. at  Williamstown, 17 June 1887. She d. 18 July 1897.
Dr. Hopkins, great-nephew of the theologian, Rev. Samuel Hopkins, D. D., was the venerated president of Williams College, whose career as an administrator, teacher, and author probably stands without a parallel in the history of American colleges. “He belonged among the latter religious leaders of New England. His endowments, his attainments, and his long service made him a unique figure among the teachers of this age.” (Carter.)
In 1824 he graduated at Williams College, where he was tutor from 1825 to 1827, and where, in 1830, after having graduated the previous year at the Berkshire Medical College at Pittsfied, he became professor of Moral Philosophy and Rhetoric. In 1833 he was licensed to preach in Congregational churches.
In 1836, at the age of thirty-four, he became President of Williams, resigning in 1872, after service of thirty-six years. No prominent New England college had, up to that time, elected so youthful a president, but, as President Carter says: “In Professor Hopkins' case it may be said that he had the intellectual maturity of middle life at thirty, and intellectual freshness of thirty when he resigned his position in 1872, at the age of sixty-eight. He was mature when he was young, and young when he was old.”
Dr. Hopkins continued his connection with the college as Professor of Moral Philosophy, until his death in 1887-a period of service from 1830, of fifty-seven years.
The degree of D. D. was conferred upon him by Dartmouth in 1837 and Harvard in 1841; that of LL.D. by New York University in 1857, and Harvard in 1886.
Among his many published writings were his lectures on “Evidence of Christianity” (1846), long a favorite text book; “Lectures of Moral Science” (1862); “The Law of Love and Love as a Law” (1869); “Teachings and Counsels” (1884).
Dr. Hopkins took a lifelong interest in Christian missions, and for thirty years, from 1857 until his death, was president of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions.
His name was placed in the Hall of Fame, New York City, in 1916. Mrs. Hopkins was a “kindly, lovable woman, who aided the discipline of the family, and both parents had that great dignity which establishes and readily maintains culture.” Her grandfather, Col. Nathan Hubbell, commanded the Berkshire troops at the battle of Bennington.
