DEATH: Knight’s Slayer Identified by 14.
Albert W. Gregg, paroled convict, was identified yesterday by 14 witnesses as the gunman who killed C. Morgan Knight, young Philadelphia broker, when the latter tried to stop his flight after a robbery in Wanamaker’s last Monday. Heavily guarded, Gregg was arraigned before Coroner Hersch and held without bail for the grand jury.

Thief Slays Man Who Interferes
Philadelphian Is Killed By Fleeing Robber Whom He Tried To Halt
(United Press Leased Wire)
Philadelphia - Oct. 27. - C. Morgan Knight, 28-year old member of a prominent Philadelphia family died today of a bullet wound suffered when he tried to stop a fleeing thief in the crowded John Wanamaker store on Monday.  The young broker and yachtsman allegedly was wounded mortally by A. W. Gregg, 32, former convict. Gregg's fingerprints were investigated by federal agents on the possibility that he might be a member of the notorious Bird gang of Midwestern bank robbers. Police said Gregg had hurdled the partition around the cashier's cage and escaped with $1240. A chase down eight flights of stairs led to the counter where Knight was shopping. Knight attempted to halt Gregg as he fled past him, police said, and Gregg drew a .38 revolver from a shoulder holster and fired into Knight's body. Gregg admitted shooting Knight, police said, and declared he recently was paroled from Joliet, ill., prison. Warden Joseph Regan of the prison informed local police that Gregg was committed January 22, 1932, as Russell Wilson after conviction on a Chicago robbery charge and was paroled December 4, 1935. Los Angeles police requested information on Gregg in the belief he may have participated in a Pacific coast crime. Police here sent Gregg's fingerprints.

Police Hunt Woman Aide Of Broker's Killer in N.Y.
The search for the woman companion of Albert W. Gregg, bandit-slayer of a Philadelphia bond broker, swung to New York City yesterday, while at the other end of the continent G-men and police ran down his possible connection with Mattson murder-kidnap case. Elsewhere throughout the Nation local and Federal authorities in various cities investigated leads opened by the  now silent, now-boastful Gregg, who shot and killed C. Morgan Knight, 28, while fleeing a holdup in Wanamaker store Monday.  Capture of his woman companion, who apparently fled the city even as police took up their relentless questioning of Gregg after his capture, may be of vital importance, local police declared. Two members of the Big Mob were dispatched to New York City to take up the search there with metropolitan police. The possible link between Gregg and Mattson case was strengthened, Captain James Ryan said when the bandit admitted during yesterday's questioning that he had staged a $2000 department store hold-up in Seattle, not far from the scene of the Mattson Kidnapping, a year ago. Police last night were awaiting data, from Tacoma, being rushed here by air-mail. Fingerprints and descriptive data are expected to reach the city today. Los Angeles police meanwhile asked for Gregg's photograph and fingerprints in connection with an $800 department store holdup there two years ago. Gregg's story that the $5000 in his possession when captured was from a holdup of the Boulevard National Bank in Chicago was exploded yesterday by Chicago police, who reported there was no record of such a robbery. Tacoma police asked for his description in connection with the kidnapping of George Weyerhaueuser, a case which Gregg himself mentioned in explaining the $5000. “You guys think I got the $5000 out of the Weyerhaeuser kidnappings?” he said. “Well, I didn't. I never was in any kidnappings.

Another Murder Charge Against Gregg
Philadelphia. Nov. 4. Captain of Detectives James Ryan said today that Wisconsin authorities were lodging a murder charge against Albert W. Gregg held here for a holdup slaying in the John Wanamaker department store. Ryan said he received a telegram from Sheriff Hans Rodd of Rhinelander, Wis., saying that Gregg “is undoubtedly the Albert W. Gregg wanted here for murder. We are forwarding a warrant.” Gregg is charged with shooting C. Morgan Knight, bond broker, following the holdup of a cashier's cage in the Wanamaker store Oct. 25.

Gregg On Trial Monday In Hold-Up Slaying
Albert W. Gregg, charged with the murder of C. Morgan Knight during a holdup at the Wanamaker Store, will go on trial before Judge Harry S. McDevitt in Quarter Sessions Court on Monday. Gregg pleaded not guilty to the murder charge when arraigned before Judge McDevitt two weeks ago. William F. Berkowitz and Robert E. Hagan were appointed to represent him. District Attorney Charles F. Kelley may prosecute the case personally. Knight, father of two children and socially prominent Chestnut Hill resident, was wounded fatally when he tried to halt Gregg after the latter had scooped up $1200 from cage on the eighth floor of the store.

Philadelphia, Nov. 25. A jury last night found Albert W. Gregg, 32, of Milwaukee, guilty of murder in the slaying of C. Morgan Knight and fixed the penalty at death in the electric chair. Knight, a broker, died of bullet wounds after attempting to halt Gregg's escape from a robbery in a downtown store last month. The jury deliberated 53 minutes. Martin J. Mealey of Bryn Mawr, and employee of the rug department of the Wanamaker store, said Knight grabbed Gregg around the waist as the Milwaukee man tried to escape from the store, “Gregg put his hand in his coat pocket and I heard a gun go off,” Mealey said. “I went to Knight's assistance and he said “he got me.” Charles F. Kelly, Philadelphia county attorney, told the jury Gregg, a paroled convict, came her for the purpose of robbing the store and murdered Knight who attempted to prevent his escape.

Three Killers Die in Chair In 15 Minutes at Rockview
Bellefonte, Pa., March 28 - Three killers - one who burned two women to death to escape marriage, another who shot a Philadelphia policeman and gangster who murdered a Philadelphia banker - died within minutes of each other in the electric chair at Rockview Penitentiary shortly after midnight. It required less than 15 minutes to execute the slayers, strangers until 36 hours before they walked, one-by-one, to their deaths. The executions brought to 272 the number of persons electrocuted for their crimes in the state. Those who died were: Ralph E. Hawk, 21, of Marion, Pa., who burned two women to death in an attempt to avoid marriage. Fred Reibaldi, 27, of Philadelphia, who killed a policeman. Albert W. Greeg, 31, a Chicago gangster, who robbed a department store and killed a Philadelphia banker while shooting his way to freedom. Hawk was first to die. He stepped firmly the few paces from the death house to the execution chamber, a smile upon his lips. He was silent and stared upward until the black death mask was slipped over his head. Two ministers accompanied Hawk on his walk to the chair. Rev. Clyde Meadows, of Chambersburg, near Marion, a friend of Hawk's in earlier days, gazed steadily at the doomed man who had turned to him for religious consolation. Rev. C. F. Lauer, prison chaplain, walked along with Hawk, intoning a psalm. He pronounced benediction. The charge struck Hawk at 12:31 a.m. He was pronounced dead at 12:34 a.m. Reibaldi walked into the execution chamber as soon as Hawk's body was removed. He was accompanied by Rev. F. P. McCreesh, Catholic chaplain, who murmured a special prayer for the dead. Pale-faced, Reibadli wet his lips with the tip of his tongue nervously as his gaze rested upon Deputy Warden Frank Craver of Holmesburg County Prison, Philadelphia, where the doomed man had been held for weeks. “So long, Warden, good luck to you. That's all,” he said. “So long,” whispered Mr. Craver. Executioner Robert Elliot threw the switch at 12:36 a.m. Reibaldi was pronounced dead at 12:39. Gregg was pale and his lips quivered as he walked, hesitantly, into the death chamber. He said nothing, but stared, fascinated, at the chair until he stumbled against it. Gregg was the only one of the trio who died without turning to religion. Rev. Lauer attempted to convert him, but until the last it was doubted that Gregg asked forgiveness. Gregg's identity was uncertain. Some believed Albert W. Gregg was an alias. If so, he died without revealing his real name, for the charge struck him at 12:42 a.m. and he was pronounced dead three minutes later. Gregg was the only man showed much agitation as the time to die approached. He smoked incessantly, and the dim light in the death house was traced by the glow of a cigarette as he restlessly paced back and forth. His was the only unclaimed body. Burial was planned for him in the prison cemetery today. Mrs. Bertha Reibaldi of Philadelphia claimed the body of her husband, the father of two children. Hawk's father, John E. Hawk, claimed the body of his son. Young Hawk had been a farm hand at Marion until he sought burn the family of Catherine Gelwix, his fiancée and an expectant mother, in an effort to avoid marrying the girl. Mrs. Hazel Gelwix and a daughter, Helen, 15, burned to death in bed but neighbors rescued Catherine although she had been hit across the head with a flashlight. Reibaldi, a paroled convict, was given the supreme penalty for a fatal shooting of a Philadelphia policeman, Maurice Handloff, who surprised Reibaldi when he held up a motorist at a traffic signal. Gregg was another parolee. He was convicted of shooting C. Morgan Knight, socially prominent investment banker of Philadelphia, when Mr. Knight interfered as Gregg escaped Wanamaker's department store in Philadelphia with $1200 he obtained in a holdup. Police at Philadelphia said Gregg also confessed robbing the Boulevard bank of Chicago of $5000 in a holdup several months before the Wanamaker robbery.

Mary Beverly Cox
Address – 64 Sumner Road, Brookline, Mass.
“Bev,” “Bevo” Entered September 1926 Born December 13, 1909
“Varium et mutabile simper femina.”
(A thing of moods and changes is a woman ever.) – Vergil
Beverly is our class jester. Whenever a laughing group of girls is found at the back of the Study Hall, Bev is sure to be in the middle of it, usually telling some wild and wooly tale of pills and fainting people at Schrafft’s, or the like. Soon roars of laughter follow; she is relating some of her favorite “punk” jokes; and above all the mirth comes her “tee-hee”. At the luncheon table, too, Bev holds forth with anecdotes about certain persons (?) who are in “humilerations” because of her exaggerated descriptions.
Bev has a peculiar manner of expressing herself. In every class she finds a way of describing what she wants to say, plucking it out of the air with her thumb and forefinger, as if this action helped in reciting a French verb or a Chemistry equation! In fact, when she asks for a “who-dinkey” in a store, those two digits are a means of conveying to the salesman the idea of the article which she desires.
Bev’s favorite color is blue and it isn’t hard to tell why, although, be it said, reason does not lie in her big blue eyes, sometimes merry, sometimes dreamy as she hears the strains of “Blue Heaven” or “Diane”. Bev surely is not blue in her thoughts, for she is the sunniest and most happy-go-lucky member of our class.

They had the following children.

BIOGRAPHY: Mary Sue McCulloch "Susie" Linden
During the 1957 wedding reception for her daughter, in a huge tent set up on the beautiful block long garden next to her ocean front summer mansion in Spring Lake, N.J., Susie decided that the lawn upon which her five hundred guests were seated would make an ideal croquet court. Today, not one but two immaculately manicured courts serve as the home of The Green Gables Croquet Club. Now in its twenty-fourth year (making it the oldest in the USCA) the club is named after the 198 year old main house whose spacious basement serves as the club house for the almost fifty member group who during the summer season, meet each Thursday evening for croquet and dinner. A constant world traveler, Susie Linden has decorated the clubroom with furniture from Hong Kong and artifacts from Figi and Bali. A replica of the club flag is inlaid in the marble floor in front of the bar. Widely known for her philanthropic works and gracious hospitality (not to mention her sharp shooting croquet eye) Susie and her husband, Carvel C. Linden, this year served as the principal hosts for the First Green Gables Invitational Tournament sanctioned by the USCA over July 24-27 weekend. Its success has assured that this event will become an annual highlight of the USCA circuit. The Lindens spend each winter in the Indian Creek Island home in Florida where we wouldn't be surprised to hear the sound of mallet on ball one of these days soon.
Susie Linden was inducted into the United States Croquet Hall of Fame in 1980. - Familysearch.org
