Samuel Bradford KNIGHT [Parents] [scrapbook]-35059 was born on 13 Dec 1845 in Knight's Creek Valley, Allegany, New York. He died on 29 Mar 1922 in Belmont Village, Allegany, New York. Samuel married Adele HOOD-35060.

OBITUARY: Times Herald

Samuel B. Knight Died at Belmont Home Wednesday
Was formerly general traffic manager of the Wabash railroad - Recently retired.
Belmont, N.Y., April 1 - Samuel B. Knight died at his home in Belmont Wednesday evening after an illness of several months, aged 76. Mr. Knight was born in the Knight's Creek valley, not far from Belmont and his early life was passed in this vicinity. When a young man he engaged in railroading and rose rapidly to the position of general traffic manager of the Wabash railroad, serving in that capacity for nearly 30 years. He enjoyed a wide acquaintance among railroad executives and was regarded as an authority on traffic matters. During his long period of service with the Wabash he lived in St. Louis. About ten years ago he retired from active business and returned to Belmont to spend his declining years amid the scenes of his boyhood days. He purchased a beautiful home here, and when not engaged in looking after his investments or visiting his ranch in Nebraska, he spent his time visiting with friends of his boyhood, now grown gray and retired from service in the business world. He dearly loved the woods and streams and for several years had served as president of the Brookland club at Walton, Pa. Mr. Knight was a keen business man and made the most of his opportunities, accumulating through a period of years by careful investing, a large estate. Mr. Knight followed the advice of the Oriental philosopher who said: “A man is rich who knows when he has enough,” When he could retire and play once more, he did so and he enjoyed life in his days of relaxation as keenly as he did youth. When his health began to fail a few months ago he did not complain. He said life had been very good to him. He said that he found in the west many men from the east who, when the shadows began to fall in the evening of life longed, as he did, to come back home to be laid away at last in the shadow of the hills over which their feet had roamed in the long ago. He said that to get back in the Upper Genesee was one of the dearest wishes of his heart. The cities are garish and artificial. In the country things are real and of all friendships those of youth are the most sincere and lasting. Mr. Knight leaves a wife and daughter, Mrs. Lewis H. Thornton of Wellsville, and two grandsons, James and Knight Thornton, the later named for him. The funeral will be held at the Episcopal church in Belmont this afternoon and the funeral private.

Wabash Changes
D O Ives appointed Freight Traffic Manager, succeeding M. Knight
D. O. Ives, general freight agent of the Burlington, has been appointed freight traffic manager of the Wabash. He succeeds the late Milton Knight, who died a few months ago. Frederick Montmorency, Mr. Ives's assistant , will probably be appointed general freight agent of the Burlington. The appointment, of course, was made by F. A. Delano, first vice-president of the Wabash. He was formerly general manager of the Burlington. Since his administration, every important office to be filled has been filled with a man from the Burlington. Samuel B. Knight, general freight agent of the Wabash, was Milton Knight's brother and was in line for the position. He is a railroad-man from the ground up. He began life as a telegraph operator in the Erie station in Buffalo.

OBITUARY: Star-Gazette
Elmira, New York
31 May 1933 (Wednesday)
Benjamin F. Knight
The death of Frank Knight at his home in Canastota removed one of the pioneer locomotive engineers of Central New York. Mr. Knight is buried today at his old home near Port Jervis, N. Y. For many years he was a resident of Elmira and ran trains out of this city over the Elmira, Cortland & Norther Railroad, later the Elmira & Cortland branch of the Lehigh Valley. Mr. Knight was 82, hale and hearty to the last and only retired as a locomotive engineer about 18 months ago, almost an age record. He was a railroad man for 60 years. Some of his early days were spent as engineer on the New York City elevated system when the trains were pulled by steam engines. In his youth he was a baseball player of some ability and throughout his life was an ardent follower of sports, a great fisherman and hunter. At 82 he was tall, straight, in perfect health to within a few weeks of his death and possessed of all his faculties. Death was caused by a tumor which asserted itself only a short time ago. Mr. Knight was one of the oldest members of the Elmira Division No. 41, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and for a long time was one of its officers. He was an honorary member of the Grand Lodge of that order and several times was a delegate to its sessions. He was a Mason and Knight Templar. Surviving him are his widow and a stepson in Canastota and two daughters who were reared in Elmira. Misses Bessie and Helen knight of Rhode Island. - (MK5855)
