Fred Walter Knight, JR.
Cartersville, Georgia    Congressional, 7th, Georgia
Fred’s first utterance at West Point was a drawled “but Suh” in true Georgia fashion. However, through the full three years Fred has managed to retain his drawl as well as the engaging smile and easy-going manner which have made him so popular among his fellow cadets. Anything in the line of sports or the sack is Fred’s great weakness, however, conflicting as they may be. A good worker to boot, an officer made from a man such as Fred will be a definite credit to any branch of the service.
Company C-1; Lieutenant; Golf Club (4,3,1).

BIOGRAPHY: John Knight was born Oct 10, 1813 in Jefferson Maine. The son of Daniel Knight and Phoebe Dunton Knight. He married Adeline Southard Tibbetts on July 26, 1838. They had five children: Charles, George, Almena, Allen, and Addie. They owned a small farm of about 40 acres in Whitefield Maine. In September of 1862, during the Civil War, John enlisted in the 21st Maine Volunteers. He was 49 years old but claimed to be only 44. The Regiment mustered on October 13, 1862 and moved to New York. Two weeks later after standing guard duty in the cold, John developed a severe illness. According to the Regimental Surgeon he had a high fever and severe diarrhea which resulted in "inflammation of the brain". He was delirious for 14 days. There was no hospital at their camp and he was treated as best as possible. There was little improvement in his condition. It was decided that there was "no probability of him being any use to the service". He was discharged on Jan 3, 1863. John returned home but never fully recovered. His illness progressed to the point where he refused to eat. In 1866 he was admitted to the Maine Insane Hospital in Augusta where he died July 16, 1864. - Find A Grave Memorial# 116787197

KIWANIS CLUB HEARS TALK ON WINE INDUSTRY Support Games of Basketball Urged Of Members
Charles W. Knight, of the agricultural department, State chamber of commerce, of San Francisco, was speaker of the day at the regular Kiwanis luncheon on Tuesday noon, with Wm. J. Masson!, chairman. Knight told of the reconstruction problems of the wine industry in the years since repeal of prohibition, and of the work of the state chamber in helping this industry, one of the greatest in this section of the state. An interesting point made by the speaker was that in America, as compared with France, which has about one-third the population, the wine consumption was approximately 30 million gallons, while France consumes 1.6 billion gallons annually. At present but 30 states allow the sale of wine, due to classification of the beverage, or food, with hard liquor. It is to break down this unnatural association, and put wine in the proper classification, that the chamber of commerce is interested in other state attitudes. Dr. E. I. Beeson urged the Kiwanians to turn out at the high school next Friday and Saturday, and help support the Healdsburg “A” and “B” basketball squads, who engage Santa Rosa and Vallejo, respective nights, for northern California title honors. A skit, “The Peacemaker,” put on by artists who will appear in the American Legion play at the Plaza theater next Monday and Tuesday nights, was enjoyed as a prelude to the speaker’s program.
