Wilbur Knight of Union Producing Company. Raised in Laramie, Wil Knight was a product of the University of Wyoming's geology department. Union Producing Company hired him as a geological scout immediately after graduation and sent him to Jackson where he became heavily involved in the Tinsley development. His Army ROTC reserve commission was activated in 1942, snatching him away to the war. Union snatched him back after his discharge in 1945. He worked his way up to district geologist, where he was actively involved in almost every major play in the Southeast in the forties and fifties.

Wilbur H. Knight (“Will” to his family and many friends) died in Jackson, Mississippi, on May 21, 1998, soon after his 77th birthday and following a short illness. Interment was in Laramie, Wyoming, in his native state and in the city where he grew up and received both his secondary and college educations. Will was born May 8, 1921, into a prominent Wyoming geological family. His father was Samuel H. Knight, the well-known professor of geology at the University of Wyoming. His grandfather was Wilbur C. Knight, a pioneer geologist who went to Wyoming in 1887 as a mineral assayer and gold-mine superintendent and later joined the faculty at the University of Wyoming as a mining engineer and museum curator. Both father and grandfather were former Wyoming state geologists. Will’s mother was the former Edwina Hall, a native of New York City, who accompanied her new husband to the wideopen spaces of Wyoming in 1916 after he had finished graduate studies at Columbia University. Wilbur Knight received his bachelor’s degree in geology at the University of Wyoming in 1940, and spent the following year in graduate school. In 1941, he married Elizabeth Lee “Betty” Fath, a fellow student at the university, who had moved to Laramie from Hillsboro,Illinois, to join other family members and for her college education. Will is survived by Betty and a son, Ernest Emery Knight. In 1941, Wilbur Knight began employment with the Union Producing Company as a geological scout in Jackson, Mississippi; this work was interrupted from 1942 to 1944 when he served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army. Following military service, he returned to the University of Wyoming to complete a master’s degree in geology before resuming employment with the Union Producing Company as a geologist in Jackson in 1945. From 1947 to 1955, Will served as district geologist for that company before resigning to become chief geologist with Larco Drilling Company. Leaving Larco in 1959, he began a long career as a prominent geological consultant with a practice centered within his adopted state. Commencing with his employment with Union Producing Company, Wilbur Knight became one of a small group of pioneering explorationists whose names and accomplishments are synonymous with the growth of the petroleum industry in Mississippi. An early assignment involved him in the development of the Tinsley field, which had been discovered by Union Producing Company in 1939 and was the first oil field in the Gulf Coast region east of the Mississippi River. Subsequently, Will was actively involved in exploratory and development drilling in several fields, including Muldon, Soso (deep), Pistol Ridge, Ansley, Sharon,Sunnyside, and Glacier. In his capacity as district geologist, he was a major participant in a venture that led to the successful completion of the first significant gas well in the Black Warrior Basin and resulted in the recognition of that region as an important petroleum province. A strong tendency during well completions to evaluate new potential reservoirs in previously untested and unproven areas also resulted in the first production from the Wilcox sand in Mississippi and initiated a significant new play. Development of the Bolton field and discovery of the Diamond field were accomplished while Will was with Larco Drilling Company. For many years as an independent petroleum geologist, he systematically constructed up-to-date geologic maps and charts that materially aided exploratory and development programs in several areas of particular interest and importance to the petroleum industry. An interesting episode in Will’s years with Union Producing Company developed from a request by his management in the early 1950s to search for an underground gas storage area in the vicinity of Jackson and near pipelines operated by United Gas. Subsequent research led to the recommendation of a small local anticline, called the Jackson Dome, that had been drilled previously to the Jackson “gas rock” (a likely storage reservoir) and where several long-abandoned gas wells had to be located and properly plugged. This was a difficult task, but eventually most of the old wells were successfully located. However, when the reservoir was filled with gas, causing an increasing pressure buildup, two or three wells blew out, and controlling them required the assistance of Red Adair, who was then in the early years of his career as a famous oil-field troubleshooter. Will's involvement in petroleum exploration and development provided a strong fundamental background not only for his work as an independent geological consultant on drilling projects, but also for his becoming a much sought after advisor in matters concerning oil and gas property evaluations and for serving as an expert geological witness in cases before the Mississippi Oil and Gas Board and agencies of the federal government. His long-time interest in the academic aspects of the earth sciences resulted in periodic faculty appointments to teach geologic courses at Millsaps College in Jackson and at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. Wilbur Knight was a member of several professional associations. He became a member of the Geological Society of America in 1954, and he achieved Fellow status in 1967. Admitted to membership in the American Association of Petroleum Geologists in 1946, Will later was an active participant in the certification of geologists for that association. Other national organizations in which he held membership include the Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientists (founding member), Society of Petroleum Engineers, American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers, Independent Petroleum Association of America, and American Society of Photogrammetry. He was especially active in several local and regional geological organizations. Among these were the Gulf Coast Geological Association, which he served as vice president in 1954, and the Mississippi Geological Society, which he served as president in 1953–1954. For his outstanding service and contributions to the latter, he was accorded honorary membership in 1989.
