Sergeant Bong Signs Two More For Canal Zone
Sergt. Henry Bonk, in charge of the U.S. Army recruiting station in Auburn, has enlisted two more youths for service in the Panama Canal Zone infantry branch. They are Stephen Wasilenke of 146 Perrine Street and Charles E. Knight of King Ferry R.D. 1, Sergeant Bonk says there are still vacancies open for the various branches of the army in Panama.

First Lt. Charles E. Knight, of the U.S. Army Engineers, son of Mrs. Sophie Hurrel of Ledyard, has been awarded the Bronze Star for gallantry in action. He has been in servive eight and a half years, mostly in the ETO.

Lieut. Knight Of Engineers Gets Decoration
First Lieut. Charles E. Knight, USA Engineers, husband of Mrs. Charles E. Knight of 50 Lincoln Street, Auburn, and son of Mrs. Sophia Hurrel of Ledyard, has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal, and announcement received today from the War Department states. Lieutenant Knight, who has been in the army for eight and a half years saw considerable action in the European Theater of Operations. He attended Waterloo High School and Alfred University and before entering the service was employed in King Ferry. Now on terminal leave, Lieutenant Knight will be discharged from the service on December 24. The citation that accompanied the medal follows:
“First Lieut. Charles E. Knight, Corps of Engineers while serving with the Army of the United States, distinguished himself by heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy in (censored), on the night of January 13, 1945, Lieutenant Knight, a platoon leader, was in charge of a wiring mission in advance of the lines when an intense enemy mortar barrage was laid on their position. After his men had withdrawn, he courageously assisted in evacuation the wounded despite enemy fire. It was then that Lieutenant Knight led three volunteers forward and supervised the wiring in the section with a double apron fence while under direct observation and mortar and small arms fire. The heroic achievement of Lieutenant Knight is in keeping with the high traditions of the military service.”

Knight Retires From Army Duty
Capt. Charles E. Knight, 180 S. Seward Ave., has retired from the Army after serving more than 22 years. His tours of duty have taken him to Panama, Puerto Rico, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany and Korea. He was a member of the original 101st Parachute Battalion forerunners of today's Airborne Army, at Ft. Benning, Ga., in 1941, in World War II,  he was with the Combat Engineers, and in Korea he was with Engineers Inteligence in the 1st U.S. Corps. Capt. Knight's last assignment was with the Seventh Army at Stugart, Germany. His decorations include the expert rifleman's badge, paratroopers wings, bronze star

Captain Charles E. Knight
Army Captain Charles E. Knight, USA, Retired of Albuquerque, N.M., died Friday, July 16, 1976 in the Veterans Hospital of Albuquerque after a long illness.
He was a native of Auburn and had resided in Albuquerque for six years. He was a member of the V.F.W. and the Masons and he was employed at GT Sylvania while residing in Auburn. Captain Knight served 22 years in the service and retired in 1958. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Hildegard Ellinger Knight, his mother, Mrs. Charles (Sophia) Deming of Auburn, two sisters, Mrs. Frank (Bessie) Barwinzcak of Auburn and Mrs. Edward (Charlotte) Shutter, one brother, Walker G. Herrel of San Diego, Calif. Graveside services will be held in Veterans National Cemetery, Alburquerque, N.M.

Horace Knight, father of Joseph A. and Charles B. Knight, was born in Leicester, June 23, 1799, died there May 2, 1855. He was prominent farmer there and a pioneer in the manufacture of boots and shoes. Before the railroad was built he carted his stock and goods between Leicester and Boston. Horace Knight, father of Joseph A. and Charles B. Knight, was born in Leicester, June 23, 1799, died there May 2, 1855. He was prominent farmer there and a pioneer in the manufacture of boots and shoes. Before the railroad was built he carted his stock and goods between Leicester and Boston. He married (first) in 1823, Sarah Partridge, of Paxton. She died August 20, 1833, aged thirty-three years. He married (second) at Leicester, in 1834, Hannah Brown, of Rutland. She died July 20, 1882, in her eighty-fourth year. By his first he four children; Mary Elizabeth, who married Swift Howe, of Paxton; Joseph Addison; Almira W., whod married George P. Rogers, a merchant of this city; and another child that died young. The only child by his second marriage was Charles Brown Knight.

The cause of his death is unknown, and have been unable to find any record of his death, not unusual for that time period. Also the identity of his mother remains a mystery, he was the result of a first marriage of his father Milo, haven’t found any information on this marriage.
