Hope Rogers - One correspondent writes that Hope had four wives and thirteen  children, but fail to name any wife except Esther Mecham, or any children except the ten given in Windham records.
According to one tradition, he was the only son of Joseph Rogers, who married Sarah Cuvier (or Currier). Shortly after his marriage he joined an expedition to Port Royal, where he was probably killed by the Indians, or French, as he was never heard from afterwards. Hope was so named in hopes of his father's return. The same tradition states that Joseph was one of four brothers who came from England and settled in Salem, Mass.

"The Rogers family, of which John C. Rogers is a worthy representative in the present generation, is supposed to have been founded in this country by Joseph Rogers, one of four brothers who came from England and settled in Salem, Massachusetts. Joseph Rogers married Sarah Cuvier or Currier, and shortly afterward joined an expedition to Port Royal, where he was probably killed by the Indians or French, as he was never heard from afterwards. Hope Rogers, the ancestor of this branch of the family, is supposed to have been the only son of the above named couple, and to have received his name in hopes of his father's return. The earliest records of Hope Rogers were found in Windham County, Connecticut, and are to the effect that he purchased lands of John Waldo, in Windham, June 5, 1713, one hundred and fifteen pounds sterling. He was a resident of Mansfield. According to one tradition he had four wives and thirteen children, but fails to name any wife except Esther Meacham, whom he married November 14, 1715, or any children except the following, which were taken from the Windham County records: Joseph, born August 5, 1716, died in infancy; Ishmael, born July 7, 1717; Ichabod, born January 19, 1719, married, November 10, 1743, Priscilla Holt, born at Andover, Massachusetts, September 14, 1725, daughter of Elias and Mary (Bixbee) Holt; Josiah, born October 7, 1720, mentioed hereinafter; Jethro, born April 14, 1722; Jeduthan, born February 16, 1724; Sarah, born February 21, 1726, married, October 11, 1744, Robert Greene; Mary, born October 6, 1727; Joel, born October 14, 1729; Ruth, born August 23, 1732." (Genealogical and Personal History of Lycoming County, Pennsylvania; Emerson Collins and John W. Jordan, LL.D., editors; The Lewis Publishing Company, New York, Chicago, 1906; pages 532-533)

Esther MEACHAM-9654 was born on 28 Sep 1694 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts. She died on 1 Feb 1771 in Milford, Fairfield, Connecticut. Esther married Hope ROGERS-9653 on 14 Nov 1715 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts.

BIOGRAPHY: HISTORY of CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY
by Andrew W. Young
1875
In 1821 William and Day Knight opened separate harness and saddlers shops, the former in a small building on the east side of Main street belonging to Elisha Allen, the latter in a small building opposite the house of James Prendergast, but soon removing to Westfield; returning in 1826; having Samuel Knight as partner one year in 1833-34, and removing finally to Randolph in 1840. William Knight changed his location several times and in 1827 moved into the Hawley Block. In 1829 he and Solomon Jones became partners; three years later they separated and after three years more Knight removed from the place. Silas Shearman worked for William Knight from December, 1822, to the fall of 1825; went to Fredonia; returned in 1827 and began business for himself, continuing without a partner until 1854. The firm then became Shearman & Son; they were succeeded by Michael Woods. John P. Shearman established himself as a saddler and harness-maker in 1839; in December, 1841, James Dinnin became a partner; Charles Kennedy bought the latters interest in 1844; Shearman & Charles Kennedy continued the business two years and a half, and then Shearman alone until 1854. After his dissolution with Shearman, Dinnin began business by himself and continued without a partner, except during one year, until 1849. His business subsequently changed hands several times and in 1858 was sold to S. Shearman & Son. At various times others were in this line of business.
