Randall Whitman (William 5, Capt. Valentine 4, Valentine 3, John 2, George), born 11 January 1806 in Peterboro (Smithfield), Madison Co., N. Y.; died 20 August 1847 in Michigan. He married first in Livingston County, N. Y., 16 March 1829, Sarah Severance, born 8 December 1804 in New Hampshire; died 29 December 1843 in Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co., Ind. Aged thirty-nine: married second, in Livingston County, N. Y., Mary Van Valkenburg.
Randall Whitman was a lad of about fifteen when he went with his parents from Onondaga County, N. Y. to the new home in Groveland, Livingston County. An old letter giving an account of the journey tells of the boy Randall walking and driving his own prized calf all the way. He married in Livingston County, removing after some years to Lafayette, Ind. After his wife's death there he returned to New York state where he located on a small fruit farm on Lake Conesus, and also ran a pleasure resort.
He finally contemplated removing to Michigan and went there to select a location. He died while on this trip, but there is no record of the place. The family was at the time disunited, the second wife not being favorable to the removal, and one daughter was living with an aunt in Port Huron.

Born in the village of Wickford, a busy shipping port, and his father a sea-captain, William Whitman early felt the call of the sea and made at least on trip as cabin boy before he was fourteen. His mother, strongly opposed to his being a mariner, brought about the removal of the family about 1784 to So. Shaftsbury, Vt., where her family, the Olins, had recently gone. Following his marriage, William located to Norway Twp., Herkimer Co., N.Y. (census 1800) where the James family had settled, removing thither from Windsor, Berkshire Co., Mass. Successive removals took him to Lenox, Madison Co., Manlius, Onondaga Co., where he sold a farm of fifty acres in 1821; and then to Livingston Co., where their farm of one hundred acres overlooked the beautiful Genesco Valley. It was pioneer life; but their two-story log house was open to travelers; they entertained the itinerant preachers; and gave of their substances to wayfarers tarrying temporarily around Lake Conesus, a mile away. The were Free Will Baptists. The graves of both William and Ruth are in Lakeview Cemetery near Hunt's Corner's, in Groveland.
