BIOGRAPHY: From Jones Genealogy, page 34:  Samuel Jones is listed as a freeman at Saybrook, CT. in 1669 and was an early settler there.  Lyme was included in Saybrook till 1667, being called Saybroon.  The family tradition says that Samuel owned a large portion of Lyme.  He lived near the mill which is sometimes called Jones Mill.  He became elector in 1667 and constable in 1669.  In 1684 he was made Lieut. of the Saybrook Trainband and in 1699, Capt. of the same. From: New England Historical and Genealogical Register VOL 59.  Captain Samuel Jones of Saybrook married Jan. 1, 1666.  Mary was the daughter of Deacon Francis Bushnell.  She died in 1727.  He was made an elector Oct. 16, 1667, a constable in 1669 and was firmed by the General Assembly as Lieutenant of the Saybrook trainband on May 8, 1684, being made it's Captain on May 11, 1699. He was a legatee of Joshua Uncas, Sachem, who willed away more land than he owned.  To Capt. Jones he gave 4000 acres.  The land he gave away was divided into 86 shares according to quality, among the proprietors of Hebron.  In 1702 this division was made.  The land belonging to Capt. Jones was divided among his three sons, Samuel, Thomas and Caleb, and the agreement by which the parting of the land was made is an interesting document, and was dated April 15, 1709.  It is found on page 212, Vol. II, of the Saybrook Records, Stephen Post and Samuel Curtice were appointed to bound and determine the several lots, according to the will and the agreement of the brothers, and their report is entered on the first book of records of Hebron, folio 6, May 5, 1713. At the Connecticut State Library is the following petition in the estate of Samuel Jones (typed exactly as it was written in the Jones of Jonesville book): "Unto ye worshipful Court of Probate in ye county of new London, in ye Collony of Conecticott in new England- We the subscribers being legataries named in ye last will and testament of Our honnoured Father Capt. Joel 5 Shed (49. Dea. Jacob 4, Dea. Nathan 3, Nathan 2, Daniel 1), born in Tewksbury, Mass., 16 Feb. 1760; when seventeen years of age joined the American army in the Revolution. His first recorded service was from 29 Sept. to 21 Oct. 1777 in Capt. Edward Farmer's company, Col. Jonathan Reed's regiment which marched to Saratoga to assist the Continental Army under Gen. Gates in capturing Gen. Burgoyne's army. He also enlisted 24 June 1778 Capt. Joseph Boynton's company, Col. Nathaniel Wade's regiment, and served until 1 Jan. 1779 at East Greenwich, R. I., as appears by various rolls during that period, in one of which dated 17 Sept. 1778 he was reported sick in hospital. (Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolution, vol. 14, p. 91.) From the United States Pension Rolls it appears that Joel Shed of Middlesex County, Mass., aged seventy-four years, was granted a pension of $41.33 per year on 29 June 1833, retroactive from 4 Mar. 1831, for Revolutionary service in the Massachusetts Militia. He always resided in Tewksbury where he is enrolled in the United States Census in 1790 as head of a family of one male over sixteen years, two males under sixteen years, two males under sixteen years and three females. In the United States Pension Census of 1 June in 1840 he is listed as residing in Tewksbury, aged eighty-one years. He died there of old age in 1841.
