| 1816 Stokes Co., NC Tax list | 1816 | 1816 tax list for the Deep River District in Stokes Co., NC. Household of Thomas Phillips appears on the tax list for the first time. Other households listed are headed by John Philips, Cadwallader Pitts, David Philips, Aaron Philips, Isaac Pitts, & Samuel Phillips. Thomas Philips is listed as owning 45 acres of land. It is not confirmed that this is the Thomas H. Phillips who married Martha Pitts in 1816, but I believe it is and all facts known support this being the correct family. The year they appear on tax records is the same as their year of marriage, numbers on the 1820 census exactly fit the family, and the year they left Stokes Co., NC also fits. Also Martha Pitts is either the daughter of Samuel or Isaac Pitts, who were brothers who both lived in Stokes Co., NC. | |
