Family of Mary Elizabeth Randall and Hermann Bergmann
|
|
Mary Elizabeth Randall, only surviving daughter of daughter of William Hannaford Randall and Elizabeth Colburn, married Hermann Bergmann, an immigrant from Lippe Detmoldt, Germany, in New York City on September 7, 1853.
Wiith his brothers Charles and Augustus, Hermann went into business with Louis and Charles Althof in 1844, establishing Althof, Bergmann Co., one of the largest toy importing firms of the period. They hired primarily fellow Germans at the corner of Church Street and Park Place in New York City. They imported mechanical dolls, tin toys, still banks, small toy vehicles and also manufactured toys, crafting the first carpet-running trains. Their products are sought after by collectors today. The firm exhibited its wares at the 1876 Philadephia Centennial Exhibition. The company was dissolved in 1880, ten years after Hermann's death.
The couple is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Brookyn N.Y.

The couple also sat for their portrait in daguerrotype
later in their marriage.

Agnes Elizabeth was born to the couple in 1854, and Charles Henry in 1856.
The daguerrotype dates to around 1859.

Charles Henry Bergmann, photographed in adulthood below right, was a pigment salesman in Brooklyn. He met up with Irish immigrant Benjamin Moore and joined the board of directors of Moore's paint company in 1885, serving as its secretary before his retirement in about 1916. His wife, Cora Jane Staudinger, poses below left with two of their grandchildren, Elizabeth and Charles Henry, elder children of the couple's son, Rudolph Bergmann.
