The son, Reihemann Johann Ernst Rasche, was born July 18, 1781. The 23-year-old bachelor on October 30, 1803 married the 24?year?old maiden Dorethea Christina Frederica Bartels, born March 28, 1780 in Stapelburg. Her father was J. H. Bartels, manufacturer of oil on the Ecker River. His wife J. Maria was born a Rasche. The young couple lived on the Rasche farm, for their children were born there.Their first years fell in the terrible Napoleonic time. The Harz province belonged to the Kingdom of Westfalen, in which Napoleon's brother Jerome ruled as King. They often told their children about it. Outside in the yard stood an outdoor oven, where from ancient times they had baked their bread themselves. Beside the oven they dug a hole, wherein they hid their provisions, and then they piled wood over it. When they wished to harvest the grain it had been ridden down by horsemen. How often they had to flee to the forest. There was a cave, of which others did not know, into which they crept, deep into the mountain. When they were at the end of the cave, their light went out, that is their candle, or oil lamp.
When Johann Ernst died on October 2, 1831 he was only 50 years old, and his survivors were three sons, one of age and two had not yet reached majority.His widow, Friederica ( Dorethea Christina Frederica (Bartels) Rasche) died December 28, 1837 and was buried on the first day of the new year, 1838.
