Esther Krost Thomas's Notes
Whenever the Christian names are known they will be given as spelled. The German spelling, of the Christian names given to the Ernst Rasch descendants, mostly was used through the second and third generation. Later however, that spelling frequently was changed by the individuals. Thus: "Luise" may have become "Louisa", "Louise", or "Lisette." "Maria" may have become "Marie" or "Mary". "Wilhelm became "William", "Will", "Willie", "Bill" or "Billy",. "Friedrich" became "Fritz", "Frederick", or "Fred." "Heinrich" became "Henry", "Harry", "Hal", or "Hen".
Also it has been found that some names are spelled more than one way in German. As an example Christiane is also spelled "Christine" and Christeana".
When possible the name given at baptism is used at least once  and later the name by which the individual was known or preferred.
It may be well to mention another change, which it was necessary to make. American typewriters are not equipped with an "Umlaut." In German the umlauted vowels are a, o, and u, and as customarily done when an umlauted vowel appeared it was written ae, oe, and ue.
March 15, 1960
Yes, I knew my Grandfather. I saw him only one time and that was when I was almost five years old. So I knew him better from what I heard others say, than from my contact with him personally. He must have been a very fine person, for he was always spoken of with a feeling akin to reverence. For many days there had been talk in our home, about going to Beaver Prairie, an annual trip, where Grandfather lived with his oldest daughter and her family. Their farm home was located about ten miles north, north-west of Carlyle, Clinton county, Illinois, while my parents lived about one and one-half miles north of Ferrin, which is located in Meridian township, also in Clinton county. The distance between the two homes was about 18 miles. How well I remember the preparations which were made for that much talked about trip. We were a large family and Mother felt she needed to bake enough bread and coffee-cake for the family before we could go, since we had only an old fashioned cellar such as were used before the coming of rural electrification and refrigeration, not much other food could be prepared in advance, but my oldest sister, Lillie, then sixteen, felt she could do all the necessary work, and take care of four younger brothers and sisters, while Mother and Father were away. It always grieved Mother that her children did not have the opportunity to see and become better acquainted with her relatives and Father's. Traveling was not easy during the latter part of the nineteenth century, for perhaps no where else did the unimproved roads become muddier in fall, winter, and spring nor dustier during the summer than in the south central part of Illinois. Even with the heat and dust, summer was perhaps the best time to plan on making such a trip. Mother decided one of the children should go along, and I was the one chosen to go. Lillie had made two new red dresses for me, and I was very proud of them, and the  afternoon before we were to start she washed my long, thick, blond, curly hair. Everything necessary had been done the evening before going to bed, for we knew it would benecessary to start early, even before day light, the next morning. There was no alarm clock in our home, and none was needed, for Father always knew, when necessary, he would hear the clock strike before daybreak. We ate breakfast by the light of a kerosene lamp, and during that time two of the boys hitched old Sal to our only vehicle other than the farm wagon, which was a road cart. A cart was a two-wheel vehicle, with one unpadded seat. Some of the carts boasted a low uncomfortable back-rest but ours had only a narrow boarder, 4 inches, around three sides of the seat to prevent the padding which may have been a blanket, or possibly a sheep pelt from slipping off, while in use. There was also a slat foot-rack built almost in the shape of a half-moon, which was open at. both ends. The seat was rather narrow, just wide enough for Mother and Father, and a small wooden box had been placed in the cart, in front of the seat on the foot-rack for me. By the time we were ready to start, the song-birds had begun to sing; the entire family was awake and had come out to tell us good-bye. Our watchdog, sensing something unusual joined the group as also did the cats and a few early-rising chickens. Affectionate good-byes were said and we were off. A heavy dew had partly settled the dust and old Sal trotted right along. Not many miles had been covered until the sun came up and Father remarked that it would be another hot day. Although frequently shifting my position, it still was rather tiresome sitting on the small wooden box  between my parents feet. Mother would try to ease the position for me by having me sit on her lap for short periods of time , making it rather difficult for her, since it was only perhaps six  weeks or two months later that she gave birth to her eleventh child! As the day wore on it, became dustier and hotter and Mother and I were wearing freshly starched bonnets, which in a way kept the dust, which billowed up between the slats in the foot-rack and all around the cart, from our hair. But my pretty red dress, I lamented, now they would not see it nice and clean and new. But for me the heat and the dust and the soiled dress were not the big problem. The way the carts were made, horses were hitched rather near the foot-rack. As the day wore on, flies began to bother the horse, and she did what horses are wont to do even in the 20th century, switched her tail to prevent the flies from biting her. Being very near the horse her switching prevented flies from even landing on me. Only children who grew up on the farm may know how the switching of a horses tail can smart. I tried to hold the tail, but gradually my muscles would relax and the switching would begin anew. Once I became so angry that I bit Sal's tail, which she seemed not to mind at all. We stopped for a drink and a bite to eat in Carlyle, the county seat. In mid afternoon we arrived at the Sohn home. There was no rural delivery of mail at that time, and many times farmers in the out-lying districts did not get their mail but two or three times a month, if the roads were useable, and then often through the kindness of neighbors, who brought the mail for everyone in the neighborhood, when they made their rare trip to. town. So for the above reasons they did not know we were coming. Never can I remember of more joy, pleasure and deep, sincere affection shown over the arrival of guests, then was shown at our arrival by every member of the Sohn household, which as before stated included Grandfather Ernst Rasch. After many hugs and kisses and tears of joy we all went into the one room of the farm house which served as the kitchen, dining-room and living-room. Quickly a lunch was put upon the table, which was not only done because of our coming, but also because it was customary to eat lunch between breakfast and dinner and dinner and supper. Lunch usually consisted of home-made bread, coffee-cake, fresh butter, a sweet spread, hand-cheese and coffee. The writer does not recall ever seeing hand-cheese in any but homes where the inmates were German or of German descent. A cheese similar to cottage cheese, but not as moist, was formed into balls about the size of  a hens egg, and put on a board to dry, being carefully covered with elevated mosquito netting. After the balls of cheese were rather well dried clear through they were put into a tall gallon crock and covered with a plate,or some other tight cover, and set into the cellar to ripen. Being the only child in this group of adults, it was not unusual for me to be temporally forgotten. I was sitting on a not-to-soft a chair and so bashful that I even did not feel free to move, legs and arms and hands when to have done so would have been a comfort. Among some of the things Grandfather still did was to feed the chickens evenings. He went out of doors and brought in a pail full of ears of corn. In order to be able to continue talking while he shelled them he brought them into the kitchen. He soon noticed the little bashful child sitting there so still and quiet. Before he began to shell the corn he said: Esther if you would come and help me, I would not have so much work to do. As we shelled the corn he began to talk to me, and very soon began to admire my pretty red dress. To that I replied: "Yes Grandpa I do not only have one pretty red dress, but I have two". With that I picked up the skirt of the dress he had seen and showed him the skirt of the second red dress which I was wearing underneath. He thought it equally as pretty and also thought it a good idea for me to wear both the dresses so that the second one would not fall out of the cart and be lost on the way. From that time on we were not only acquainted but good friends. By some magic Grandfather had changed a very bashful child into a confident young lady. It was during this visit in the Sohn home that the writer stood beside her Grandfather and watched him weave a basket out of willow twigs which he had cut from trees growing along the banks of Beaver Creek near the Sohn home. Even though the infirmities of old age made it impossible for him to do other manual work his skillful hands were nearly always busy. He spoke to me of the pleasure it had given him to make a basket for each of his 10 living granddaughters who already had come to see him, and because he knew some day I too, would visit him, he had started to make one for me and would now complete it so that I might take it home with me. He stood by and watched as the basket was securely tied to the cart as we were about ready to start on the return trip, in order that itwould not be lost. Could he but have known that forty years later his great granddaughter - the writer's youngest daughter - would fill that same willow basket with beautifully colored Easter eggs to take from her home in Indiana on a visit to Illinois and give one Easter egg to each of the many relatives she visited. Still in a perfect  condition, that basket is treasured, not only by the writer, but by all of her descendants.
