A Brief Biography of Steve Cozine
Steve Cozine, born Carl Steven, spent his early childhood in the small town of Piedmont, MO. When he was ten, his family moved to Alton, Illinois where his mother continued to be a school teacher, and his father began working as Parts Manager at a Ford dealership. Upon graduating from Roxana High School in 1962, he enrolled at Illinois State at Normal. There he met Linda Cravens. In 1966 linda and Steve graduated with Bachelors Degrees of Science in Education, and in July they were married. Before the ink had dried on the Marriage Certificate they were on their way to Las Vegas. That August they began teaching at Lincoln Elementary School as fifth grade teachers. In 1967 the Cozines began a family with the birth of their daughter, Kari Lynn. Steve knew that his salary of $5,600 wouldn't go far with his growing family and so began his master's degree. For the next two years Steve and Linda would spend their summers in Flagstaff, Arizona while Steve earned his master's degree in Education.
The Cozines began their great and committed involvement in the Clark County Classroom Teachers' Association. One of their most memorable moments would be when they voted against the District's Contract which ended with the first and only teacher strike. This was just the tip of the CCCTA iceberg. Later, Steve would hold almost every office in the association and man almost every committee.
In 1970, the Cozine family expanded for the last time with the birth of their son, Christopher Scott. At this time, Linda became a stay-at-home-mom, and Steve continued in North Las Vegas for another 10 years. In 1980 he decided to move closer to home, and began teaching fifth grade at Ruth Fyfe Elementary School. His principal, Carl Partridge, was glad to have him on staff. Mr. P. was the person responsible for hiring the newly wedded Cozines, back in 1966.
Continuing with his commitment to the Clark County Classroom Teacher's Association, Steve was asked to become a full-time Education Lobbyist at the Nevada Legislature in 1983. Upon his return, he continued teaching at Fyfe. In 1989, he and Linda were selected by the Nevada State Education Association to represent them at George Bush Sr.'s Inauguration. Steve concluded his work in the classroom at R.O. Gibson Jr. High School in 1996. At that time, he was elected, and eventually ended his career in education, as the Clark County Educators' Association's President and Public Employees Retirement Systems' appointee.
Through the years, Steve etched out an amazing and busy life in Las Vegas. Not only were the teaching profession and Clark County students touched by Steve's commitment, but the community felt his presence as well. He was a Boy Scout leader of a short time and then turned his attention to the Silver State Coin Club and the las Vegas Numismatic Society. Steve was an active member and president of both organizations. To this day, Linda is still an active member. Steve also was involved with the las Vegas Audubon Society, a neighborhood captain for the American Cancer Society, and the Neighborhood Watch Program, just to name a few.
Steve's community involvement included a strong church affiliation. He and linda were one month shy of being charter members of the University United Methodist Church, where for 30 some years their family was in regular attendance. Steve also was a member for the Church's Administrative Board and for many years was the Annual Conference, Lay Member representative. his love for church and commitment are still present in his wife, daughter, and son-in-law who still attend UUMC and teach Sunday School.
With Summer visits to Illinois and Missouri, the Cozines also toured and traveled to all but one state in the great U.S. These travels stimulated Steve's love of photography and provided many opportunities to exercise this hobby.
Steve Cozine was an inspirational, master teacher, a community leader, and a dedicated husband and father. Within the halls of Steve Cozine Elementary School these attributes will be memorialized. Because of this school, Steve's three grandchildren and students around the Las Vegas will know him and what he stood for. having a school named in his honor was a dream come true as well as a deserved and earned tribute. We are forever indebted to those who worked diligently to see this come to fruition.
