Note | My conclusion that Samuel Worley of Ashe County was the son of Edmund and Martha is based on the following: Conley Worley remembers that Giles and Mary Graham were uncle and aunt at some level to the Worleys. His older brothers used to spend summers at the Grahams (with Giles' son by then). In the 1860 Ashe census, Giles and Mary Graham appear in Ashe Co for the first time with Samuel Worley living with them. They are found in the Floyd Co VA census in 1850 with a Samuel Whorley living with them then, 10 years younger. in that same census there are various Whorleys living with other families, most of them children: With Posey Gilenwater family Maria 9 born Franklin Co ( in 1860 census with Giles Graham family in Ashe Co, NC) With Samuel Goodson family Patsy 35 born Franklin Co With Isaac Phlegar family Rebecca 15 With Giles Graham family Samuel 10 With Jonathan Terry family Vina 14 born Franklin (marriage record 1856 of Louvina Worley d/o Edmond & Martha Worley to Henry Wood s/o Henry & Frances Wood) If any of these children are Vina's siblings, then since Vina is the daughter of Edmund and Martha, then the siblings are also. We know Martha went by Patsy because she appears by that name in Ashe censuses with Henry Grogan, but the marriage record says Martha (1856). We know that the Martha who married Henry Grogan and lived in Ashe is really the mother of Lavina who married Henry Wood because Vina and Henry had a son named Columbus and a Columbus Woods, grandson, lived with Martha and Henry in the 1880 census (Ashe). Conley Worley remembers that "Viney" Wood was his grandfather's sister. We know Rosabell is Martha's daughter because it says so on her marriage license to Thomas Jones (Ashe). We know Rosabell is Giles Graham's niece becase it says so in the 1880 census. We know Giles Graham's wife is named Mary Moore. There is a marriage record in Franklin Co VA in 1834 of a Martha Moore to Edmund Whorley. If Rosabell is Giles' niece and Rosabell is Martha's daughter then Martha is either a sister to Giles or Mary. Giles did have a sister named Martha but she was born in 1832, too young to have a 10-yr-old son by 1850. So Martha Patsy is a sister of Mary, which fits the Martha Moore/Edmund Worley marriage record. Conley's brother Edmund who is now deceased was named after some ancestor, according to his widow. His name is Edmund Spencer Worley and he was told that the ancestor he was named after had that same name. Columbus Wood named a son Edmund Spencer Wood.
(Witness) Census | 1850 | Samuel S. Worley appeared on the census of 1850 in the household of Giles Graham at Floyd County, VA.4 |
(Same Note) Fact 1 | 21 September 1855 | On 21 September 1855, at Ashe County, NC,, Giles Graham received a land grant #3351 for Entry No 1281, entered Feb 2, 1854. The property was described as 15 acres, on the Three Top Fork of the north fork of the New River, adjoining James Hardins and Roton. The final grant was witnessed by T.C. Calloway and Samuel Whirly. Sam Worley at this time would still have been a part of Graham's household..5 |
(Witness) Census | 1860 | Samuel S. Worley appeared on the census of 1860 in the household of Giles Graham at Ashe County, NC.6 |
Fact 1 | 1862 | In 1862, The following is the information found in the NC state Archives regarding Samuel Worley's service in the Civil War: In Company M, 58th Regiment, North Carolina Troops. WORLEY, SAMUEL, Private. Resided in Watauga County where he enlisted at age 21, September 26, 1862, for the war. Furloughed for ten days on October 25, 1862. Failed to return to duty and was reported absent without leave in January-February, 1863. Transferred to Company G of this regiment in May 1863, while absent without leave. According to Michael Hardy, who is writing a book about the 58th, Company M contained all conscripts, almost all of whom deserted. There were so few of Company M left that it had to be combined with another company. I found it very interesting to look at the list of the "recruits" into Company M, who all "enlisted" on exactly the same day. They were all familiar, from the same area of the county where Samuel Worley and Jordan Grogan lived. Besides Sam, they included Jerd and 2 of his brothers, Solomon Shaw, who later married Sam's sister, and two of his brothers, four of Hannah Gentry's brothers (Hannah who married Jordan Grogan after the war), Robert Jones, who was probably Sam's first cousin, Daniel Graham, who married Robert's sister and was also Giles Graham's brother, several Greers who were cousins of the Gentrys, and several other men who were married to Greer girls..7,8 |
Fact 1 | Conley Worley says both his grandfathers were "for the north," during the Civil War. When he was a child he says they used to argue with Tom Jones, Grandpa Worley's cousin, who fought for the south..1

Fact 1 | 18 October 1881 | On 18 October 1881, at Ashe County, NC,, S.S. Worley received a land grant from the state of NC, grant Number 3912, for 13 acres located at Elk Ridge on the waters of Oldfield Creek. His warrant, number 4989, dated Dec. 7, 1880, was for fifty acres "to include the vacant land between W.P. Gentry and Laz Stephens and the said Worley own land." The witnesses to the grant were Wesley Grimes and Nelson B. Moore. I don't know why the final grant was for only 13 acres. A description of the land is as follows "on the Elk Ridge on the waters of Old Field Creek, beginning on a chesnut saplin said Worley's corner, running north with Stephens' line nine poles to a locust then East with said line eighteen Poles to a sugar sprout then North with said line sixty six poles to a rock on the extreme height of Elk Ridge in said Stephens line, then south twenty-seven west with extreme hight of said ridge forty poles to a chesnut on top of said ridge then south sixty west thirty-two poles water oak then south forty seven west thirty three poles to a chesnut oak said Worley's corner then East with said line to the beginning." The deed or grant b which he acquired the "own land" referred to is not indexed at the Ashe courthouse or the land grant listings in Raleigh. I doubt if it was inherited, because his father died when he was very young, and his mother and step-father and his wife's parents were still living in 1880. So he must have purchased the land between 1870 (when he was listed in the census without real property) and 1880, but not recorded the deed. We know he had at least 66 acres in 1908, when he sold 30 and 36 acres to two of his sons..11 |
Census | 1900 | Samuel S. Worley, as referred to here..14 |

He was the son of William Moore and Rebecca Swinney.
Marriage | 26 October 1834 | Wilson G. Moore married Elizabeth Shue, daughter of Joseph Shue and Elizabeth Holtz, on 26 October 1834 at Franklin County VA.2,3 |
Death | circa 1889 | Wilson G. Moore died circa 1889 at Ashe County, NC. |
Note | I have not been able to find any record of Wilson obtaining his land. There is no deed or grant recorded in the courthouse and no grant in the Ashe index for grants in the state archives. Evidently he did not record the deed. He probably left the original to Nelson with his will.
Note | Why I believe Wilson is the son of William and Rebecca: (1) Rebecca lived with him in the 1860 census. (2) He came to Ashe County, NC and lived near other family members. (3) His marriage was performed by the same minister that married Judy Moore daughter of William, and Martha Moore daughter of William, and was witnessed by a Griffith (Griffiths were mentioned in multiple William Moore deeds.) (4) He was listed on the tax lists in multiple years next to William S Moore AKA William Jr, who was the son of William and Rebecca per his death record, and both of them (plus Allen, a probable brother) moved to Washington County at the same time.
Fact 1 | between 1835 and 1847 | Between 1835 and 1847, at Floyd County, VA,, Wilson Moore was listed for personal property taxes. From 1843 to 1846, Wilson G, Allen and William Jr were always listed together. I wonder if they were working on the same farm or living in the same place..4 |
Census | 1840 | Wilson G. Moore appeared on the census of 1840 at Franklin County, VA, as follows: Listed as "Willis Moore," but there is no Willis Moore referenced again in Franklin Co in any census or tax lists for 15 years, so I believe the census taker made a mistake with the name of Wilson. 00011-20001. The 15-20 year old male would be younger brother William, Jr.5 |
Fact 1 | between 1848 and 1854 | Between 1848 and 1854, at Washington County, VA,, Wilson Moore was listed for personal property taxes (except 1849). He was not there before 1848. The films I checked did not go farther than 1854. William S Moore and Allen Moore showed up there for the first time in 1849 and remained through 1854 also, although they were not listed next to WIlson. In fact they were not in the same district..6 |
Census | 1850 | Wilson G. Moore appeared on the census of 1850 at Washington County, VA, as follows: Household #1562 Wilson G. Moore 38 Elizabeth 35 Matilda 15 Louisa 7 Charlotte 8 William 6.7 |
Fact 1 | between 1858 and 1862 | Between 1858 and 1862, at Floyd County, VA,, Wilson Moore listed for personal property taxes. He was not found in 1850-1857. The film I looked at only went as far as 1862. William S. Moore appeared beginning in 1857 and was there through 1862 also. His name was listed next to Wilson in several of the years..4 |
Census | 1860 | Wilson G. Moore and Rebecca Swinney appeared on the census of 1860 at Floyd County, VA, as follows: Household #637 Wilson G. Moore 48 Elizabeth 45 Matilda E. 25 Henry F 15 or 25 or 75, can't read Rebecca 76 I have no idea who Henry is.8 |
Fact 1 | 1 December 1868 | On 1 December 1868, at Ashe County, NC,, Wilson G. Moore was appointed admnistrator of the estate of Elizabeth Jones, deceased, "the next of kin having removed." There are two Elizabeth Joneses whom this could have been. First, Reuben Jones, the husband of Wilson's sister Judy, married an Elizabeth after Judy's death. Elizabeth was his wife in the 1860 census, but by the 1870 census his wife was Rebecca, so we know that Elizabeth did die in the 1860's. But Reuben was right there in the 1870 census, so I can think of no reason it would say "the next of kin having removed." Also since her spouse was still living, I don't think a married woman would have an estate to admnister, since all property was owned in the name of her husband. The more likely Elizabeth Jones is the one William Moore was living with in the census of 1850 and 1860 in Floyd County, VA. There is evidence that William came to NC before 1867, because of the paper signed by him and dated that year in the Graham family papers. Elizabeth could have moved to NC with him and died there. Since she was unmarried, any assets she had would have needed to be taken care of in case of her death..9 |
Census | 1870 | Wilson G. Moore appeared on the census of 1870 as follows: I have searched for Wilson in the 1870 census, but he isn't indexed under North Carolina or Virginia. I believe he was probably in NC, because his daughter Matilda got married there in 1865, but I don't know why he wouldn't have been enumerated. |
Census | 1880 | Wilson G. Moore appeared on the census of 1880 at Ashe County, NC, as follows: Old Fields Twp, HH#172 Moore, Willson G. 68 farmer VA VA VA Elizabeth 64 Keeping house VA VA VA Nelson B. 16 grandson farm laborer VA VA VA.10 |
Will | 3 September 1886 | Wilson G. Moore left a will on 3 September 1886. I W.G. Moore of Ashe County North Carolina, being of sound and disposing mind and memory but mindful of the uncertainty of this mortal life and knowing that it is appointed unto all men to die, do make publish and declare the following to be my last will and testament. That is to say Item 1st as listing my worldly substance with which God has blessed me I will and devise all my lands and tenements whereon I now live, containing sixty-three acres more or less, together with my household and kitchen furniture unto my grandson Nelson B. Moore to have and enjoy the same after the death of my wife Elizabeth. This devise to my said grandson is upon this express condition if he continues with me during my life time and takes care of me and my wife as he has heretofore done then the property above devised is to be his. But if my wife outlives me she is to have her home here the same as she now has during her life. As to the remainder of my estate of every kind and discipline, I will and direct the same to be equally divided between my daughters Matilda Worley Charlotte T. Greer and my said grandson Nelson or their heirs should any of them die during my lifetime. This last devise to take effect after the payment of funeral expenses. I hereby constitute and appoint my said grandson Nelson B. Moore my executor to this my last will and testament and hereby direct him to carry out its provisions as here declared. And revoking all former wills by me made I now declare this only to be my last will and testament. Done on this the 3rd day of September 1886.11 |
Fact 1 | 10 March 1902 | On 10 March 1902, at Ashe County, NC,, Nelson B. Moore and wife C.E. Moore of Ashe County, sold to Thomas S. Holman for $400, 63 acres on the waters of Old Field Creek. The only landmarks listed besides trees are the line of John Graybeal and that of "the iron works." Note | Wade Eller was a historian who interviewed elderly people in Ashe County in the 1950s about their family history. His collection also includes some information from public records, such as Ashe County marriages. On most of his cards, he noted his source. He had a card for Hugh Tilley, containing information on the marriage to Elizabeth Blevins. At the bottom, where he normally listed sources, it says "See Ashe Co Mar Recs." At the top in slightly smaller writing, as if it were written at a different time, it says "son of Letha" and in the middle of the card, also in smaller writing it says "father R.L. Doughton" Now I know Hugh was illegitimate and that Letha is the correct name for his mother. I noticed that several of the other cards for people named Tilley say at the bottom "Ref Robey Tilley, Creston, NC 1956." Now Robey Tilley was born in 1876. He was the son of Charles Emory Tilley, who was the son of Lazarus Tilley. He would have known Hugh Tilley and Leitha Tilley personally, and if I am correct that Leitha was Lazarus' sister, then Robey Tilley's father was Hugh's first cousin. If it was a known fact who Hugh's biological father was, Robey Tilley would have been in a position to know. R.L. Doughton was the name of a Congressman from Alleghany County. Doughton Park was named after him. He could not have been Hugh Tilley's biological father, because he was younger than Hugh. However, his father, J.H. Doughton, married his mother in 1854, so he was definitely old enough to have had a fling with Leitha in 1853 and fathered Hugh. The Doughtons lived in Laurel Springs, and in the 1860 census James and Leitha Tilley lived in Flint Hill, which is an old name for Scottville, which is very near Laurel Springs. So I know they lived near enough to have known each other. My assumption is that Mr Eller got the information he added in small print to his Hugh Tilley card during his interview with Robey Tilley, and that Robey Tilley at the age of 80 got the initials wrong but knew what he was talking about. That would make Hugh's father either J.H. Doughton or some relative of his. Neither the Ashe County nor Alleghany County courthouse has a will for J.H. Dooughton, or any other Doughton old enough to be Hugh's father. So I doubt if I will ever be able to find further evidence of this connection.3

Marriage | 25 December 1858 | Leitha R Tilley married James M. Tilley on 25 December 1858 at Ashe, NC.2 |
Death | between 1880 and 1900 | Leitha R Tilley died between 1880 and 1900 at probably Surry County, NC. |
Note | The relationship of Charles and Susan as parents of Leitha is a probable only, not proven. Leitha appeared for the first time in Ashe County when she married James Tilley in 1858. I can find no record of her before that date. She doesn't appear to be a daughter of Edmund Tilley, who is the only Tilley in Ashe County old enough to be her parent. She was born in the 1830s, but Edmund's household in the 1840 census did not include any females except his wife. Lazarus Tilley, who appeared in Ashe County for the first time in the 1850 census, was the son of a Charles Tilley, according to his grandson who was interviewed by Wade Eller in the 1950's. There was never a Charles Tilley in Ashe County in a census, but a Charles Tilley of Stokes County bought land in Ashe County in 1859. A few months later, Charles Tilley of Ashe County sold that land to James Tilley. Charles Tilley was named the administrator of Edmund Tilley's will in 1862. There was a John Tilley who was a Revolutionary War soldier from Surry County, NC who later lived in Stokes County. His pension application stated that he had sons named Charles and Edmund. A Charles Tilley was listed in the Stokes County census of 1820 and then in Surry County 1830-1850, but not after 1850. There is a marriage record in Stokes County in 1815 of Charles Tilly to Sukey Tilley, and the wife of the Charles in Surry in 1850 was named Susan (Sukey is a nickname for Susan.) He is the only Charles Tilley I can find in the state of NC in any of these census years, and in any tax year. The combination of these clues leads me to believe that the Charles Tilley of Stokes and Surry County was Edmund's brother and that he moved to Ashe County in the 1850s but moved away soon after. If this Charles was the father of Lazarus, he was also likely to be the father of Leitha, who probably came to Ashe County following her brother Lazarus, or along with her father. There were children in Charles' household in the 1840 census of the ages to be Leitha and Lazarus. He must have lived briefly in Stokes County after leaving Surry, but he did not remain there because he wasn't listed there in any census.2
Name Variation | Leatha's marriage to James is listed twice in the Ashe County Marriage Records book. I assume one was based on the license and the other on the marriage return from the minister. On page 147 her name is spelled "Letty", and on page 209 it's spelled "Lethey."3

Birth | 1760 | Frederick Severt was born in 1760 at Ohlenrode, Brunswick, Germany. |
Death | between 1830 and 1840 | He died between 1830 and 1840 at Ashe. |
Fact 1 | According to Mae Severt, a descendant (quoted by Monte Deboard in the E.B. Reeves papers), "Frederick Severt was a hired Hessian soldier who fought with Cornwallis. He fled to the Dismal Swamp where he became lost for 2-3 weeks, nearly starving to death. He eventually found his way out, traveled across VA, marrying a Poole woman somewhere along the way. He eventually settled in Ashe Co. and had three children. Mae is descended from his son John. ".1
Note | There is an IGI on Frederick Sever b abt 1754 Muhlenberg, Ky file # 1760896. No other info. Per Dan Murphy, a descendant, there were multiple Frederick Severts. This one married somebody else and stayed in Ky. Kim Barr notes says he was a Hessian soldier Per K Barr notes: 1810 census Ashe Sever, F Males 2 under 10, 1 >45 Females 2 under 10, 2 16-26, 1>45 1820 Seaford, Frederick Males 1 16-18, 1>45 Females 1 under 10, 2 16-26 1790 Frederick Sever Rowan Dave Reedy says he can't remember where he got it, but that Fredrick's parents or grandparents came from Germany to PA and Fred was born there From the files of Eleanor Baker Reeves at the Ashe library, there was a letter dated 1975 to Mrs Reeves from a "Monte". The librarian was almost positive that this was Monte Ann DeBoard, who is the libraian's cousin. In the letter Monte says she spoke with Mae Severt. Per Mae, "Frederick Severt was a hired Hessian soldier who fought with Cornwallis. He deserted and fled to the Dismal Swamp, where he became lost for 2-3 weeks, nearly starving to death. He eventually found his way out, traveled across Va, marrying a Poole woman somewhere along the way. He eventually settled in Ashe Co and had 3 children. Mae is descended from his son John, Caroline from Frederick Jr. Mae said that Barbara married Capt John Miller, from whom Dr Edward Miller is descended, but I found a marriage record that shows she married an Eli Bare in 1844."

Note | The following is on the first page of Danny Miller's book, in the Ashe County Public Library: It is very possible that this ancestor of the Blue Ridge Millers was named George. A letter written by James Martin Miller (in the possession of Liz Moore), states that the information provided was given to James Martin Miller by his step-grandfather Tobias Woody, who married Catherine Miller, Mother of Jordan Ashley Miller and grandmother of James Martin Miller. This letter states verbatim. "George Miller from Germany my Great Grandfather's Grandfather, his wife was a Honing from Germany, who married about the time of Revolutionary War. His sons were Mik, George, John, Jake, Stephan, Christian. Christian was my Great Grandfather. His sons were Jake, Washington, Jackson, Christian, his daughters were Easter, Catherine, Liz, Axie, Millie. Christian's father was George. Christian's wife was Judea." Copied on the back of the same page is written: "Suches, Ga, about the latter part of the 1880's or the first part of the 1890's the statements on the reverse side of this sheet were given to me by Tobias Woody, stepfather to my father, Jordan A. Miller and was given at my request that I might trace my ancestry on my fathers' side of the family. Jas. M. Note | It has been stated that Winifred is the daughter of John and Mary Oliver of Bertie County, NC. That couple did indeed have a daughter Winifred mentioned in their will. But Joseph grew up in Hanover County, VA and lived there until after the time his children were born. Hanover County is a long way from Bertie County, NC. Until I see some evidence fhat John and Mary's daughter had some real connection to the Gentrys, I believe that this relationship is unlikely. |

(Witness) Fact 1 | 29 May 1883 | On 29 May 1883, at Ashe County, NC,, Jesse F. Blevins and Margaret his wife and Wm J. Stringer and Martha his wife all of Ashe County sold for $400 to James B. Johnston all their interest in three tracts of land on the waters of the South Fork of New River. The first tract contained 80 acres, the second tract containing 70 acres and the third tract containing 50 acres. These are exactly the sizes of the three tracts of land Alexander Johnson "sold" Catherine in 1840..9 |
(Witness) Fact 1 | 2 July 1885 | On 2 July 1885, at Ashe County, NC,, H.R. McMillan, administrator of J.B. Johnson, deceased, deeded to A.D. Reed a tract known as the Caroline Johnson lands that J.B. Johnson sold to the said A.D. Reed before he died and received full payment of $300.00. The land was described as "beginning on a white oak on the west side of the Rocky Branch a corner of J.B. Carson's known as the James Dickson corner thence with Carson's line east 126 poles to a small black gum in a ?hallance, then South 65 poles to a Stake a black oak and dogwood blazed a witnesses west 121 poles to a white oak stump an old marked white oak as a witness then south fifty west 16 poles to a stake and double chestnut at A. Reves's fence, thence north 48 west 21 poles to a chestnut stump a corner of Sarah S. Johnson's land and for a division line between said Sarah S. Johnson and A.D. Reed North 27.5 west 25 poles to a white oak north 12.5 west 26 poles to a stake set up by J.B. Johnson's corner, thence north 76 east 44 poles to the beginning." The deed was witnessed by J.E. McMillan and A.N. McMillan..10 |
(Witness) Fact 1 | 16 July 1885 | On 16 July 1885, at Ashe County, NC,, Sarah S. Johnson made a deed of quitclaim to H.R. McMillan administrator of J.B. Johnson (dec) for $100, releasing her interest in one tract on the waters of the South Fork of New River, containing one hundred six and one-half acres. The land was described as beginning on a white oak on the west side of the Rocky Branch corner of J.H. Carson's land and known as the James Dickson corner then north 24 poles to a stake set up and white oak stump then west 76 poles to a stake in the line of an eighty tract of land which formerly belong to Catherine Johnson then with a line of said tract n 25 degrees 60 poles o two lines on the bank of the river then up the river with its several courses..... then leaving the river and for a division line between said parties n 66 degrees 12 poles to a hickory n 42 E 16 poles to a stake between two white oakes N 89 1/2 E 45 1/2 poles to stake set up on a ridge N 76 E 44 poles to the beginning. I'm not sure why Sophina is only releasing 106 acres. Catherine Johnson owned 200 acres in total, and William and Margaret released their right to 200 acres to James B. I know Sophina was deeded 50 acres as part of James B.'s estate settlement, and here she releases 106 acres, so we're missing any document where she released the other 44 acres. Since the land sold to A.D. Reed didn't given acreage, I'm guessing it's the 44 acres and she must have released it to James B. at some point without a deed being recorded..11 |
(Witness) Fact 1 | 16 July 1885 | On 16 July 1885, at Ashe County, NC,, H.R. McMillan, administrator of J.B. Johnson, deceased, made a deed of quitclaim to Sarah S. Johnson, releasing all rights to a fifty acre tract of land in return for $200. The description of the tract was a follows: "Beginning on a white oak an old corner of Catherine Johnson's land then with her old line north 50 degrees east 97 poles to a double chesnut. Thence north 47 degrees west 23 poles to a chesnut stump. Thence north 26 degrees west 33 poles to a white oak. Thence north 12 degrees west 26 poles to a stake set up as a corner of J.B. Johnson's land. Then with agreed line between J.B. Johnson and Sarah S. Johnson. Thence south 89 degrees west 45.5 poles to two white oaks. Thence south 42 degrees west 16 poles to a hickory thence south 66 degrees west 12 poles to a water oak on the bank of the South Fork of New RIver. Thence south 25 East 16 poles to a dogwood. Thence south 18.5 degrees east 104 poles to the beginning. The deed was witnessed by A.N. McMillan. It was not registered until 1898. Catherine Johnson had 200 acres in total. Her children William and Margaret had already sold their interest in her lands to their half-brother James. This appears to be the vehicle by which one-fourth of the land was segregated for Sophina..12 |

Note | Notes regarding the parentage of Polly Morris. In the Jesse Greer notebook it states that Polly was the daughter of Henry and Franky Morris and that she was born Sept 17, 1787. This information was in a narrative apparently written originally by Jesse Greer, Sr but porbably copied over later by Jesse Jr or another family member. Surely Jesse Sr knew the names of his own wife's parents. The W.A. Wilson memoir, on page 45, tells the story, told to him by Polly in about 1878, of her elopement with Jesse. The story states that she lived along the Yadkin River in Wilkes Co and Jesse lived on the New River. It says that her father objected to the marriage because she was only 13, so they eloped, wading across the Yadkin on stilts. They crossed the Blue Ridge at Gap Creek and were married by Jesse's uncle by marriage, Elijah Calloway. BUT there is no Henry Morris in the Wilkes County census or tax lists between 1778 and 1800, and no deeds or court records in the name of Henry Morris. The only record of a Henry Morris I can find is that Henry Morris and John Baker witnessed the marriage of George Baker to Susannah Morris in 1778. The next year John Baker himself got married and a witness was Geroge Morris. So There WAS a Henry around 9 years before Polly was born, and he was probably related to George Morris. But George Morris lived on the New River, not on the Yadkin River. The Yadkin River also flows through Caldwell Co, which was then part of Burke Co. There WAS a Henry Morris in the Burke County census of 1800, but his age was 16-26 and his household consisted of just himself and a wife, no children. There were also a James Morris and a William Morris in Burke Co who would have been old enough to be Polly's father. This is worth further research. Also because of the nearness to Tennessee, the Morrises could have lived there, on a different river. I have no access to 1800 census for TN. George Morris disappeared from Wilkes County before 1790. He must have moved away. So even if there was a Henry who was part of his family, that doesn't seem related to Polly who lived on some river, supposedly the Yadkin, within a day's walk of where Jesse lived at Gap Greek near the Ashe/Wilkes line. I did find a family of Morrises living in Wilkes for just a short time, between 1797 and about 1805. There was an Edward Morris on the Wilkes tax list of 1797. Two deeds of other people in 1799 refer to Edward Morris's corner, although there is not a deed for Edward himself. One of the 2 deeds refers to Brushy Mountain and the other mentions the waters of Scotts Creek near the Iredell County line. Then in 1801 John Morris bought 150 acres bordering Edward Morris's corner. Landmarks mentioned were Grassy Fork of Little River and Scott's Branch. John sold that land in 1805. In 1805 another deed between two other people for land on Grassy Fork of Little River was witnessed by Susanna Morris. In the 1800 Wilkes census these 3 people are listed adjacent to each other: John Morris, Edward Morris, Absalom Morris. These people are not in the Wilkes census of 1810, so they didn't live there very long. But if Jesse Greer Sr did get the name of Polly's father wrong, one of them could be him. Or if her father was Henry he could have died and John, who was over 45 in 1800, could have been her grandfather. But as far as I can tell, these people lived on the top of Brushy Mountain, not on any river.4,1,5,6
Fact 1 | Per William Albert Wilson. His great grandmother, Mary Morris Greer, wife of Jesse SR, told him this story: Polly Morris was reared on the Yadkin River in WIlkes Co and Jesse on the S Fork of the New R, which at the time of their marriage had become Ashe Co. Polly's father objected to the marriage on the grounds that Polly was too young. However, Morris allowed Greer and his dau to talk matters over and during the allotted time they planned an elopement. Old man Morris was good enough to ferry young Greer to the western bank of the Yadkin. Polly appeared little disappointed and went about her work. Late in the afternoon, as planned, Polly Morris went down to the river bank and young Greer, caryring his gun in one hand, waded the river on stilts and when he reached the bank he took her on his back and waded back. They walked to the home of an acquaintance and told them they were hurrying to Ashe Co where they woulod get married. They crossed the BLue Ridge at Gap Creek which was only 4 miles from the Greer home at Old Fields. Elijah Calloway was magistrate at Old Fields and Jesse and Polly were married by him. Calloway as had Benjamin Greer, Jesse's father, had married a Wilcoxen, daughter of John and Sarah. So Calloway was his uncle. The monuments of Jesse Greer Sr and Mary Morris Greer are in the Howell Cem at Todd. .7 |
