Marriage 29 December 1838  Rhody Brown married Joshua Cox, son of Joshua Cox, on 29 December 1838 at Ashe County, NC.1 
Death between 1857 and 1860  Rhody Brown died between 1857 and 1860 at Ashe County, NC. 
Note   I think Rhody is the daughter of James because he appears to be the one who got her the land grant, the age of the Rhody who is the wife of Joshua Cox in the 1850 census matches the age of James' only daughter in the 1830 census, she joined Senter church at the same time as Martin and "Susan" (probably Susannah, James' wife), the bondsman for the marriage of Rhody to Joshua Cox was Aaron Senter, who joined Senter church a month after the Browns did. Joshua Cox joined Senter church several months later (April 1839). 
Fact 1 16 September 1837  On 16 September 1837, at Ashe County, NC,, Roady Brown obtained a land grant #2256 for entry #8375 dated June 2, 1837. The land was described as 100 acres, adjoining William Brown's line to the north (at the top of "Little Fenic" Mountain), being on the waters of the North and South forks of the New River. The land also adjoined Turner and "the Mary Harlis tract." The final grant was witnessed by James Brown and Martin Brown..2

Be it remembered that I John Reves of the County of Ashe and State of North Carolina, being somewhat weak in body but of sound and disposing mind and considering the uncertainty of this mortal do make and constitute this my last will and testament in the following manner to wit
In the first place I commend my soul to God who gave it and my boddy to be decently burried the expenses whereof and all my just debts to be paid as soon as convenient.
(2) as to what earthly goods it hath pleased God to bless me with I leave them as follows. As me and my beloved wife Nancy has a marriage contract whitch is to raise stock in common I bequeath and give unto her and her heirs the one half the proceeds as set forth in the marriage contract.
(3) I give and bequeath unto my daughter Charity McMillan and her heirs them tracts of land the one known as the Christopher Treadway tract supposed to contain two hundred acres and the other contain thirty acres adjoining the first tract known as the Ham Reves land.
(4) I give and bequeath to James Johnston Jun on hundred and fifty dollars and also I will and bequeath unto Sufiney Johnston one hundred dollars.
The residue of the property that I have on hand I want it equally divided between my two sons William B. and A.M. Reves and my daughter Charity McMillan and as to what money and notes I may have on hand at my death I want equally divided between my beloved wife and my here above named children. I appoint my two sons William B Reves and A.M. Reves my executors to settle my estate and confirming this to be my last will and testament given under my hand this the 14th day Feby 1881 Jno Reves

[The amounts bequeathed to James and Sufiney Johnson are substantial for that time. I can find no uncle/cousin kind of relationship between John Reeves and these people. They did not care for him in his old age or anything; he had a family to do that, and Sofina was housekeeper for her Uncle James at the time. James Jr and Sofina did not live together, such that they jointly could have been neighbors of John Reves and been left money because of friendship. The only reason I can think of for the bequest is that he was their biological father. He did happen to be about the same age as their mother. His eldest child, Charity, was born c1835, so both James and Sofina were probably born before John's marriage to Cynthia.].4

Fact 1 29 May 1883  On 29 May 1883, at Ashe County, NC,, Jesse F. Blevins and Margaret his wife and Wm J. Stringer and Martha his wife all of Ashe County sold for $400 to James B. Johnston all their interest in three tracts of land on the waters of the South Fork of New River. The first tract contained 80 acres, the second tract containing 70 acres and the third tract containing 50 acres. These are exactly the sizes of the three tracts of land Alexander Johnson "sold" Catherine in 1840..5 
Fact 1 19 August 1884  On 19 August 1884, at Ashe County, NC,, "It appearing that James Johnson has died a resident of ashe County and intestate upon motion it is ordered that H.R. McMillan be appointed as administrator on the estate of the said James Johnson".6 
Fact 1 November 1884  In November 1884, at Ashe County, NC,, H.R. McMillan, adm of James Johnston [sic] reports there came into his hands from the estate of John Reves in cash the amount of $150.00.7 
Fact 1 16 February 1885  On 16 February 1885, at Ashe County, NC,, Charity Johnson, widow of James Johnson deceased registered a petition against David, Emeline, Elzina, Catherine, Mary Jane, John, Margret and James Johnson for her dower share in James Johnson's land. A.B. McMillan, A.D. Reed and L.R. Pennington laid off her dower on March 25..8 
Fact 1 2 July 1885  On 2 July 1885, at Ashe County, NC,, H.R. McMillan, administrator of J.B. Johnson, deceased, deeded to A.D. Reed a tract known as the Caroline Johnson lands that J.B. Johnson sold to the said A.D. Reed before he died and received full payment of $300.00. The land was described as "beginning on a white oak on the west side of the Rocky Branch a corner of J.B. Carson's known as the James Dickson corner thence with Carson's line east 126 poles to a small black gum in a ?hallance, then South 65 poles to a Stake a black oak and dogwood blazed a witnesses west 121 poles to a white oak stump an old marked white oak as a witness then south fifty west 16 poles to a stake and double chestnut at A. Reves's fence, thence north 48 west 21 poles to a chestnut stump a corner of Sarah S. Johnson's land and for a division line between said Sarah S. Johnson and A.D. Reed North 27.5 west 25 poles to a white oak north 12.5 west 26 poles to a stake set up by J.B. Johnson's corner, thence north 76 east 44 poles to the beginning." The deed was witnessed by J.E. McMillan and A.N. McMillan..9 
Fact 1 16 July 1885  On 16 July 1885, at Ashe County, NC,, H.R. McMillan, administrator of J.B. Johnson, deceased, made a deed of quitclaim to Sarah S. Johnson, releasing all rights to a fifty acre tract of land in return for $200. The description of the tract was a follows: "Beginning on a white oak an old corner of Catherine Johnson's land then with her old line north 50 degrees east 97 poles to a double chesnut. Thence north 47 degrees west 23 poles to a chesnut stump. Thence north 26 degrees west 33 poles to a white oak. Thence north 12 degrees west 26 poles to a stake set up as a corner of J.B. Johnson's land. Then with agreed line between J.B. Johnson and Sarah S. Johnson. Thence south 89 degrees west 45.5 poles to two white oaks. Thence south 42 degrees west 16 poles to a hickory thence south 66 degrees west 12 poles to a water oak on the bank of the South Fork of New RIver. Thence south 25 East 16 poles to a dogwood. Thence south 18.5 degrees east 104 poles to the beginning. The deed was witnessed by A.N. McMillan. It was not registered until 1898.
Catherine Johnson had 200 acres in total. Her children William and Margaret had already sold their interest in her lands to their half-brother James. This appears to be the vehicle by which one-fourth of the land was segregated for Sophina..10 
Fact 1 4 April 1898  On 4 April 1898, at Ashe County, NC,, The wording of the deed is as follows: "whereas on the 16th day of July 1885 Sarah S. Johnson conveyed to me a certain parcel of tract of land in Ashe County on the waters of the South Fork of new River adjoining the lands of John H. Carson, A.D. Reed and others, containing 106 acres for the sum of $100 in trust for the heirs of James B. Johnson, eight in number, and by conveyance David L. Johnson has become the owner of three eighths of said land and James F Johnson has become the owner of three eighths of said land and Maud and Carle Johnson, heirs of John A Johnson have become owners of one fourth of said land and request separate deed...that part of said land agreed upon by the parties n the division of the same...beginning on a cucumber n the South bank of the South Fork of New River and running south 36 degrees west 51 poles to a stake, then south 8 degrees west 46 poles to a white oak then north 86 degrees east 45 poles to a stake A.D. Reed's corner, then north 76 degrees east 45 poles to a white oak John H. Carson's corner, thence north 84 poles to a chestnut on the bank of the river, thence with the river 61 poles to the beginning, containing 40 acres more or less." Signed H.R. McMillan, Witness D.B. Thirdly, I give and bequeath unto my wife Mary Reeves and her children all my stock of cattle with the exceptions of the cattle I have or have had at Robert Baker's, which I give and bequeath unto my daughter Jane Baker, also I give and bequeath unto my wife Mary Reeves and her children all my stock of hogs and sheep, also I give and bequeath unto my wife Mary Reeves and her children four head of horses known by the names of Dick, Pidgeon Kit and Young Tim, also tree colts two yellow and one brown.
Fourthly, I give and bequeath unto my two sons John Reeves and Eli Reeves five young horse beasts being the residue or remainder of my stock of horses Except one filly which I give to my daughter Jane Baker and which Robert Baker has in his possession.
Fifthly, I give and bequeath unto my son John Reeves one black boy by the name of Rodge, and unto my son Eli Reeves one black boy by the name of London, and unto my daughter Elizabeth Cox, one black Girl by the name of Mossey and unto my daughter Jane Baker and her children one black boy named Joe.
Sixthly, I give and bequeath unto my wife Mary Reeves during her life or widowhood all the balance of my Negroes, consisting of five boys, namely Bil, Samuelson, Simon, Hard and Dick and three women Lucy, Rachal and Nance and to decend to her children as they become of age or at the death or marriage of my wife with their increase, also I give unto my wife Mary Reeves all my household and kitchen furniture to be disposed of at her will and pleasure, also all the farming tools of every kind to be retained by my wife Mary Reeves on the farm.
Seventhly, I will that one black man by the name of Handy which is now hired at the Lead mines on New River be sold and the money equally divided between my three sons George Reeves, John Reeves and Eli Reeves, also one black girl named Hanner.
Last I hereby appoint my beloved friend George Bower my sole executor to carry this my last will and testament into effect, empowering him to collect all debts due me and to make sale of such stock or negroes as he shall see proper for the purpose of settling my debts, such property to be taken out of the bequests to my wife Mary Reeves and her children, and I do hereby revoke all other wills by me made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this the 15th day of September AD 1833.

Fact 1 23 June 1849  On 23 June 1849, at Ashe County, NC,, James Johnson sold to Alexander Reves for $150, 150 acres on the waters of the South Fork of New River adjoining Carson, Gentry and Jesse Reves. The deed was witnessed by M. Carson and E.C. Bartlett.

This must be land James inherited from his father, since there's no record of his receiving it by a deed or grant. There was a fire at the Ashe courthouse in the 1860's which apparently destroyed some records, including wills. There is no will recorded for Alexander Johnson in the Ashe willbooks, but then there are less than 20 wills for the first 50 years of the county's existence, so I believe he must have had one and it was lost..2

Birth 5 June 1810  James Johnson was born on 5 June 1810.1 
  He was the son of Alexander Johnson and Frances Frankie Gambill. 
Death circa 1884  James Johnson died circa 1884 at Ashe County, NC. 
Fact 1 23 June 1849  On 23 June 1849, at Ashe County, NC,, James Johnson sold to Alexander Reves for $150, 150 acres on the waters of the South Fork of New River adjoining Carson, Gentry and Jesse Reves. The deed was witnessed by M. Carson and E.C. Bartlett.

This must be land James inherited from his father, since there's no record of his receiving it by a deed or grant. There was a fire at the Ashe courthouse in the 1860's which apparently destroyed some records, including wills. There is no will recorded for Alexander Johnson in the Ashe willbooks, but then there are less than 20 wills for the first 50 years of the county's existence, so I believe he must have had one and it was lost..2

Fact 1 2 February 1884  On 2 February 1884, at Ashe County, NC,, Sophina Johnson appeared before a justice of the peace and claimed that James Johnson, deceased, owed her $1,178.00 for labor rendered by her. She signed with her mark. It was registered in the deed book..7 
Fact 1 2 February 1884  On 2 February 1884, at Ashe County, NC,, Alexander Johnson appeared before the justice of the peace and swore that James Johnson, deceased, owed him $1,100.00, for for eleven years "work and labor" at $100 per year. He signed his name "J.A. Johnson," and the claim was recorded in the deed book..7 
Fact 1 4 February 1884  On 4 February 1884, at Ashe County, NC,, "It appearing to the satisfaction of the court that James Johnston sen is dead and having left no last will and testament it is ordered that A.N. McMillan be appointed administrator of the estate of the said James Johnston, the next of kin having failed to apply after notice issued to them. He having come into court and filed his bond.".8 
Fact 1 4 August 1884  On 4 August 1884, at Ashe County, NC,, This item ran in the Appalachian Philosopher newspaper for 6 weeks ending September 13, 1884: "Petition for sale of land for assets. A.N. McMillan, administrator of James Johnson, deceased and others, plaintiffs, against Hiram Johnson and others defendants. It appearing to the satisfaction of the Court that Hiram Johnson, Amanda Johnson, Alexander Johnson, John Johnson, William Johnson, George Howell and wife Elizabeth, Hardin Sullivan and wife Franky, Jesse Johnson, Edward Johnson, ____ Burton and wife Polly, ______ Joiner and wife Sukey, are nonresidents of this state. It is therefore ordered that publication be made for six weeks in the Appalachian Philosopher, a newspaper published in the town of Jefferson, commanding the said non-residents to appear at the office of the said Clerk of the Superior Court of Ashe County within 25 days after the expiration of the said six weeks and answer the petition of plaintiffs, or the same will be heard ex parte as to them." I don't recognize all these names, but Edward, Sukey, Jesse and Polly are the names of siblings of James, and Franky is the name of one of William's offspring. This is definite evidence that the James Johnson who died in 1884 and whose administrator was A.N. McMillan was indeed the James Johnson son of Alexander and Franky. Since he had no children, his siblings or their children are his heirs. The only ones listed here are the ones who did not live in NC..9 
Fact 1 1 March 1886  On 1 March 1886, at Ashe County, NC,, "By virtue of a decree of the Superior Court of Ashe County authorizing me to sell the lands of ?mns intestate James Johnson to create assets to pay the debts of the said James Johnson," A.N. McMillan, administrator, after advertisement, sold to A.D. Reed, the highest bidder, for $70.00, a tract of land on the waters of the South Fork of the New River adjoining Alex Reeves.10

  Morgan Brown is the son of James Brown and Unknown first wife (?).1 
Note   I don't know for sure if Morgan existed. There is no Morgan Brown in any household in Ashe County in either the 1850 census or the 1860 census. And there are no sons in James' household in the 1840 or 1830 census other than Martin and Gibson. But family tradition in Martin's family is that Martin had a brother named Morgan who was killed during the Civil War. And there is one deed in the Ashe Courthouse for "Margan Brown" purchasing land adjoining William Brown, although I guess it's possible that Margon was a mis-print for Major. We do know that James had other children before Martin and Gibson who apparently weren't in Ashe County until later, so it's possible that Morgan did exist and was another of these earlier children of James. But that doesn't explain where he was in the 1860 census.2,1

Note   The slaves sold at John McMillan's estate sale were bought by Mahala Halsey, Mary Dixon, William McMillan and Matilda Dickson. We know William and Mary were John's offspring, as they were named in the will. Also Caswell Halsey, Mahala's husband, was mentioned. We know that there were other daughters from the census; I think this is evidence that Matilda and Mahala were two of them.3

I think this couple may have been "living together." When they were together in 1850, I thought she was a widowed daughter. But notice she kept having children after 1850, so somebody had to father them. William did have a daughter Judy who married a Jones, but they lived in Patrick County in the 1850 census and had a completely different list of children.3 
Fact 1 1 December 1868  On 1 December 1868, at Ashe County, NC,, Wilson G. Moore was appointed admnistrator of the estate of Elizabeth Jones, deceased, "the next of kin having removed." There are two Elizabeth Joneses whom this could have been. First, Reuben Jones, the husband of Wilson's sister Judy, married an Elizabeth after Judy's death. Elizabeth was his wife in the 1860 census, but by the 1870 census his wife was Rebecca, so we know that Elizabeth did die in the 1860's. But Reuben was right there in the 1870 census, so I can think of no reason it would say "the next of kin having removed." Also since her spouse was still living, I don't think a married woman would have an estate to admnister, since all property was owned in the name of her husband. The more likely Elizabeth Jones is the one William Moore was living with in the census of 1850 and 1860 in Floyd County, VA. There is evidence that William came to NC before 1867, because of the paper signed by him and dated that year in the Graham family papers. Elizabeth could have moved to NC with him and died there. Since she was unmarried, any assets she had would have needed to be taken care of in case of her death..4
