Note |
|
According to the Smyth article, Edward Frisbie had a wife named Hannah who joined the church in 1687. Edward Frisbee quotes Savage's genealogical Dictionary of New England (1860-62) as stating that Edward Frisbie's wife Hannah was probably the daughter of John Rose. I know that a John Rose had a daughter Hannah who married Benoni Frisbie, so that's probably who Savage was referring to. Frisbee also quotes Henry Rogers (1895) as stating that Edward had two wives, Abigail Culpepper and then Frances, the daughter of Jonathan England. Jacobus, with no discussion, lists only one wife "Hannah ?Culpepper." However many wives there were, none is listed in Edward's 1690 will, so they were all deceased by then. Benoni in the old testament was the name that Rachel, wife of the patriarch Jacob, gave to her second son Benjamin as she was dying. The Bible says the word means "son of my sorrow." Jacob renamed the boy "Benjamin." The Frisbie family may have used the name because Benoni's mother or someone else in the family (possibly a grandparent?) died at the time he was born. Jacobus lists offspring for 5 of the Frisbie children. Benoni had no daughters, and the eldest 3 of the other 4 had daughters named Hannah and none named Abigail. Ebeneezer, the only child who was a minor at the time his father's will was written, named a daughter Abigail and none Hannah. There's no child named Frances in any of the families. I suspect that Hannah was the first wife and mother of the elder children, Abigail was the second wife and mother of the younger children, and if Frances existed at all she was a third wife married later in life. I don't know if it was Hannah or Abigail who was a Culpepper and where that name came from in the first place. Needs more research.1,3 |
Fact 1 |
25 October 1689 |
On 25 October 1689, The last will and testament of Edward Frisbye made bequests to his children as follows: Son John was to receive "so much as to make what he hath had already fifty pounds; he having already received about five and thirty pounds." Sons Jonathan and Benoni were to receive several parcels of land each. Daughter-in-law Rebecca Tyler, "relict of my son Samuel," was to receive five shillings. The remainder of his lands were to be divided among "my five children that now live with me; viz. Abigail, Josiah, Calib, Silence, and Ebenezer," with the exception that "the remainder of my lot in the Beaver Swamps," after Benoni's two acres, be divided "between my three youngest sons, Josiah, Calib and Ebenezer." The Rev. Samuel Russell and John Frisbye were appointed guardians to son Ebenezer until the age of 21. All the moveable estate was to be divided "between six of my children, Abigail, Josiah, Calib, Hannah, Silence, and Ebenezer, with grandson Edward Frisbye to receive a heifer two years old. Son John Frisbye was appointed executor..4 |
