? Doughton
Note |
|
Wade Eller was a historian who interviewed elderly people in Ashe County in the 1950s about their family history. His collection also includes some information from public records, such as Ashe County marriages. On most of his cards, he noted his source. He had a card for Hugh Tilley, containing information on the marriage to Elizabeth Blevins. At the bottom, where he normally listed sources, it says "See Ashe Co Mar Recs." At the top in slightly smaller writing, as if it were written at a different time, it says "son of Letha" and in the middle of the card, also in smaller writing it says "father R.L. Doughton" Now I know Hugh was illegitimate and that Letha is the correct name for his mother. I noticed that several of the other cards for people named Tilley say at the bottom "Ref Robey Tilley, Creston, NC 1956." Now Robey Tilley was born in 1876. He was the son of Charles Emory Tilley, who was the son of Lazarus Tilley. He would have known Hugh Tilley and Leitha Tilley personally, and if I am correct that Leitha was Lazarus' sister, then Robey Tilley's father was Hugh's first cousin. If it was a known fact who Hugh's biological father was, Robey Tilley would have been in a position to know. R.L. Doughton was the name of a Congressman from Alleghany County. Doughton Park was named after him. He could not have been Hugh Tilley's biological father, because he was younger than Hugh. However, his father, J.H. Doughton, married his mother in 1854, so he was definitely old enough to have had a fling with Leitha in 1853 and fathered Hugh. The Doughtons lived in Laurel Springs, and in the 1860 census James and Leitha Tilley lived in Flint Hill, which is an old name for Scottville, which is very near Laurel Springs. So I know they lived near enough to have known each other. My assumption is that Mr Eller got the information he added in small print to his Hugh Tilley card during his interview with Robey Tilley, and that Robey Tilley at the age of 80 got the initials wrong but knew what he was talking about. That would make Hugh's father either J.H. Doughton or some relative of his. Neither the Ashe County nor Alleghany County courthouse has a will for J.H. Dooughton, or any other Doughton old enough to be Hugh's father. So I doubt if I will ever be able to find further evidence of this connection.1 |
