1862 |
From "The Heritage of Ashe Co" vol 1 #286 : At the age of 16, Jordan, along with his brother Elijah, enlisted in Company M, 58th North Carolina Regiment, in the Army of the Confederacy. From this distance in time we can only speculate his reasons, but on May 27, 1863 he enlisted in Company G, 4th regiment of the Tennessee Volunteers, Army of the United States, at Jonesborough, TN and served until he was mustered out with the company on Aug 2, 1865. During his service he became ill with typhoid and was sent to a house in Knoxville that had been converted to a hospital. WHile there he also took measles and was then transferred to the Asylum Hospital. He spent a few days in a convalescent camp before rejoining his regiment in Kinston. Whne the regiment left he was among those unable to march and so was left behind in the Kinston courthouse. Prisoner of war records show that he was captured and paroled at McMinnville, TN on Oct 3, 1863. Jordan returned from the war carrying the silk for his bride's wedding dress. On Aug 25, 1865 he was married to Hannah Charlotte Gentry..........Jordan farmed, raised cattle, and was quite vexed if he didn't manage to raise a larger hog each year than any of his neighbors. He was a quiet, unassuming man who faithfully cared for his wife, who was an invalid for many years. A lasting memory of one of his grandchildren is of him feeding the crickets on the hearth while waiting to give his wife her last medication at 11 PM..contributed by Selma Stevens.2 |

- Tombstone says Polly H. The cemetery records book calls her Polly Caroline Brown. I don't think that is correct. Hugh had a sister named Polly Caroline, but I've not seen this Polly's middle name as Caroline. But it's referring to the correct tombstone, because the dates match.

Wm Blevins inherited land on Big Helton Creek from his father Wells. He sold this and bought approx 700 acres on Long Shola Creek, west of the Shatley Springs property. Wm built a log home, a grist mill, blacksmith shop and the first schoolhouse in the community. Years later another schoolhouse was built on this farm. Later this school and others were consolidated to become Oakdale School. The grist mill was at the intersection of Shatley Springs Rd and Old NC 16. When his sons married he gave each one of them 120 acres. Most of this land is now owned by descendants.1 |

William Blevins appeared on the census of 1830 at Ashe County, NC, as follows: 201011-110012. I don't know who the other couple is. Ron Blevins speculates that it's William's brother George. There is another William Blevins household in this census, but there is only one family in that household, and their ages do not match this family.7 |

Note |
|
The marriage record in Montgomery In of Rebecca Stitt to William Blevins on about the right date did not make sense since both are supposedly from Ashe. But when I discovered Robert and Jean Stitt of Grayson County (right next door to Ashe) whose son James died in Montgomery Co IN, that is evidence that the family did migrate there. There are no other Stitts in Ashe Co at the appropriate time of Rebecca's birth, but Robert and Jane were in Grayson at the right time, the connection makes sense. |
