Note |
|
Aliases were common in England at the time Thomas Cooke lived, especially in Dorsetshire. An alias came into existence when a woman married twice and the children were sometimes known by the name of their stepfather, in the case of illegitimacy, or when a person had no sons and the husband of a daughter agreed to have sons bearing her surname. It is not known why this family had two surnames, but it does not appear to be related to a profession. The "Butcher" is also spelled Bowcher, Bocher and Boocher in Dorset records. Thomas Cooke apparently dropped the second surname when he came to New England, but did use it once, in a 1660 deed to his son John in Rhode Island. It is this alias that proves the relationship between the Thomas Cooke in Rhode Island and the Thomas Cooke alias Butcher in Dorsetshire.4 |
