Fact 1   Family tradition among various branches of the Slocum descendants is that Elephel Fitzgerald was a highborn Irish lady, who came to New England with an older sister who was eloping with a gentleman not approved of by their father. The tradition also says that the parents of Eliezer, who were Quakers, forbid the relationship, and locked Elephel in the smokehouse, from where she was rescued by Eliezer, who climbed down the chimney..2
