I'm not sure when Arthur immigrated. Some sources say he probably came when Henry did, which was about 1632, but I don't think there are any records of him that early, or The Great Migration Begins would have included him, which they did not. According to Wakefield and Sherman the first record of him in New England is in November 1640, when he was granted land at North River (now Marshfield), Plymouth Colony.4 |

Note |
|
We do not know if Margaret is the mother of Arthur Howland's older children or not. The wording of her will makes it clear that Arthur, the youngest, is her son, but does not clarify relationship to the other chidlren. Wakefield and Sherman say there is no evidence that she was a second wife, but there is none that she wasn't, either.2 |

Note |
|
I have four sources for the Briggs family, and only one of them gives a name for Thomas' wife. Pearl Heck names her as Sarah Cornell, sister to Thomas, without revealing the source of that name. It worries me that if the information exists somewhere, the other authors should have found it. I've found several sources on the Cornells also, and none of them mention that Thomas had a sister who married John Briggs. However, Ms Heck has more detail regarding the family than any of the other authors, so it's quite possible that she did more in depth research and found material that the other authors did not find. It appears to be a known fact that Thomas Cornell married John Briggs' sister, Rebecca. So it's very possible that John could have married Thomas' sister. The will of Thomas' probable father named only sons, so we don't know who his daughters were, if any. Thomas had a probable brother William who died in 1629 and left a widow named Sarah. I wonder if she could be a candidate for John Briggs' wife. This family needs more research.1,2,3,4,5 |

Immigration |
1633/34 |
Judith Smith immigrated in 1633/34 to Boston. She was a servant to Edward Hutchinson, who came to Boston in 1633. Edward was the brother-in-law of Anne Hutchinson, leader of a religious group that was kicked out of the Puritan church for expressing incorrect beliefs. Judith joined the Boston Church on OCtober 2, 1634, so she either came in that year, or a year earlier with her employer. She must have followed Mrs. Hutchinson's teachings, because she was "cast out of the church" on April 15, 1638, for her "obstinate persisting" in "sundry errors" and "sundry lyes."1 |
