Fact 1 |
|
The following is an exerpt from "The Family History of Leslie Vernon Turner and Alice Gertrude Moors" found at the GCHS library.
"From a newspaper artical [sic] of unknown source, I have accumulated all that I know of John and Mary Ann Turner's personal life. This newspaper artical may be found at the Gloucester County Historical Society located in Woodbury, New Jersey. I now quote the artical. OBITUARY. John D. Turner, who died last Wednesday at the house of his son-in-law Jeremiah Souder was born at Bethel Gloucester County, New Jersey on December 1, 1803. His father Benjamin Turner was a Methodist local preacher. [discussion of John's life, marriages, and children] The artical continues with a listing of John's three brothers and nine sisters. (see the artical on Benjamin Turner and Sara Duffell for a complete listing.)"
K Worley: The current staff (2006) at the GCHS library have attempted to located the obituary referenced here, and have not been able to find it for me. On the page for Benjamin Turner and Sara Duffell, referenced as containing the information from the obituary about John D.'s siblings, it lists the same children that are in the Benjamin Turner Bible record, except that there is also a daughter Susannah, who is not in the Bible record. I wonder if the person who copied the Bible accidentally left off a line. Also, this listing has names of spouses and dates of birth. The dates exactly match the Bible record, except that Ms Graham must have had access to the same Bible record in a more readable version, because all the missing or partial dates were filled in..5 |
Fact 1 |

The following is a transcription of a single handwritten page found in the Turner Family folder at the Gloucester County Historical Society. The page is undated and contains no further information.

Fact 1 |
between 1784 and 1802 |
Between 1784 and 1802, Benjamin Turner appeared on the tax list of Gloucester County, Deptford Township. He was the only Benjamin Turner on any surviving tax list in the state of New Jersey. Unfortunately, the book does not explain what years' lists have survived for what counties. However, I photocopied 5 pages, all the ones containing any Turners, and there are no listings for anyone in Gloucester County after 1802. There are numerous listings beginning in 1779 and following, and a few, although not Deptford Township, in 1774 and 1777. So it appears that Benjamin was first taxed as an adult in 1784, but we do not know when he ceased being taxed..6 |
Fact 1 |
10 March 1794 |
On 10 March 1794, Benjamin Turner was one of the founders of the Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church in Deptford Township. The other founders included Bishop Francis Asbury, William Dilkes, Andrew Dilkes, John Turner, Daniel Bates, John Early, Joseph Jackson, and John Porch..7 |
Fact 1 |
6 February 1827 |
On 6 February 1827, Benjamin Turner purchased two lots in Franklin Township, Gloucester County, from Jacob Fisler, containing 1.92 acres and 2.54 acres. The properties adjoined other lands belonging to both men and also land of Samuel Leddon. The purchase price was $22.04. I did not find an earlier deed by which Turner purchased the adjoining property mentioned. We know that Benjamin inherited property from his father Robert Turner; I have not tried to trace whether this could be the same property.
I cannot prove this is "my" Benjamin Turner, but I have found no other record of a Benjamin Turner in Franklin Twp who would have been an adult at this time except his son, who was born in 1799. It is possible that Benjamin Sr could be dead by this time and Benjamin Jr could be owning land, but age 27 might have been a little young to already own land and be purchasing more, and I think it might have been common to refer to the son as Benjamin Jr, which was not done here..8 |
