THE SOUTH JERSEY GENEALOGIST Vol. 1 No. 3 Page 9 The Christian Timberman Family of South Jersey
Compiled by William B. Brown, III
Christian Timberman came from Germany to South Jersey before the Revolutiionary War. He had two sons, William and Jacob Timberman who married sisters, Ann and Hannah Hogate, daughters of Samuel and Hannah (Hutchinson) Hogate.
William Timberman married Ann Hogate on January 3, 1779 at the Pittsgrove Church (Salem County). He was taxed as early as August, 1779 for owning land in Pittsgrove Township, Salem County. William and Ann Timberman had at least four children (1) Jacob Timberman who married Sarah McShane on January 17, 1807. (2) Jonathan Timberman who married Hannah Thomas (3) Samuel Timberman (4) William Timberman. These were the "Salem County Timbermans."
Jacob Timberman was a private in Captain Taylor's Company, Third Regiment, Gloucester County Militia (Stryker). He was in the battles of Trenton and Germantown, crossed the Delaware with Washington and passed the winter at Valley Forge. His war record and an account of his grandson, Isaiah Timberman, appear in the "Biographical History of Pottawattamie County, Iowa". In 1783 Jacob Timberman was listed as a householder in Woolwich Township, Gloucester County. Jacob and Hannah had at least six children (1) Gideon Timberman who married Rhoda Nichols on November 3, 1808 (2) Hannah Timberman (3) Elizabeth Timberman who married Peter Strang (4) Sarah Timberman who married Michael Turner (5) Prisella Timberman (6) Christian Timberman who married first Elizabeth Duffle and second Sarah Cassiday.
In the 1830 census for Franklin Township Gloucester County, Jacob Timberman was listed as being between 80 and 90 years old. The "Woodbury Village Herald" of March 9, 1831 carried the following notice "Jacob Timberman died Wed., Feb. 28, 1831."
In 1837 Christian Timberman and his family left Gloucester County, New Jersey to live in Hamilton County, Ohio where he died at the age of 80 in 1866. Christian and Sarah Timberman's son, Isaiah was born in Gloucester County on October 15, 1829 and remembered the trip from New Jersey to Ohio with his family. In March 1855 he took up 160 acres of government land in Coffey County, Kansas. A complete account of his life appears in the "Biographical History of Pottawattamie County, Iowa" by Lewis Publishing Company, 1891. Mrs. Urbane V. Maynard of Muncie, Indiana is a descendant of Gideon and Rhoda Timberman and supplied data for this report..1 |
Fact 1 |
13 May 1818 |
On 13 May 1818, at Gloucester County, NJ,, Jacob Timberman purchased 40 acres of from Samuel and Elizabeth Fislerfor $300. The land was in the township of Woolwich beginning on the public road leading from Samuel Fislers to the Union Meeting House. It was described as "part of a larger tract of land Samuel Hogate late of Gloucester deceased became seized of during his lifetime and died so thereof seized, and sand land descended to his children and heirs..and the said children and heirs as aforesaid came to a division of the said tract." It doesn't say anything about one of the heirs selling to Fisler, so he must have been one of the heirs, presumably through his wife..2 |
Fact 1 |
4 July 1826 |
On 4 July 1826, at Gloucester County, NJ,, Jacob and Hannah Timberman of Franklin Township sold 20 acres of land to Christian Timberman for $1.00. The land was described as being in Franklin Township, beginning on the public road leading from Samuel Fisler's to the Union Meeting House and bordering Benjmain Fisler and the land where Jacob Timberman now lives, being part of a tract Jacob Timberman purchased from Samuel Fisler..3 |
Census |
1830 |
Jacob Timberman appeared on the census of 1830 at Franklin Township, Gloucester County, NJ, as follows: 1 male 80-90, 1 female 60-70.4 |

Hannah Hogate
b. circa 1764
Birth |
circa 1764 |
Hannah Hogate was born circa 1764. |
Marriage |
|
She married Jacob Timberman, son of Christian Timberman. |
Fact 1 |
28 December 1837 |
On 28 December 1837, Hannah Timberman "widow of Jacob Timberman, Decd," Sarah Turner wife of Michael Turner and Elizabeth Strang, all of the township of Franklin, sold 24 acres of land to Benjamin Fisler for $45.00. The land bordered the road leading from Samuel Fisler's to the Union Meeting House, Charles Davis, John Jackson, Leonard Fisler, and was part of a tract of land purchased by Jacob Timberman from Samuel Fisler.1 |
Fact 1 |
3 February 1852 |
On 3 February 1852, Christian Timberman of Hamilton, Ohio and Hosea Wilson and Mary Ann his wife of Cincinnatti, Ohio, sold to Hannah Timberman of Franklin Township for $50.00, the same 40 acres that Jacob Timberman bought from Samuel Fisler in 1818. So possibly the sale to Benjamin Fisler was reversed somehow? Or maybe Fisler sold to Timberman and Wilson?.2 |
Fact 1 |
19 August 1852 |
On 19 August 1852, Jonathan Timberman and Catherine his wife sold land to Benjamin Fisler for $20. The wording on the deed is confusing and difficult to read , but it appears that he was selling his one-eighth part of land of Jacob Timberman, "who at his death left four children, Gideon Timberman, father of the above grantor being one of them, who also deceased.".3 |
