It seems out of pattern for this to be the only child with a middle initial listed in the census. |

Also I know Jordan's age is wrong, and Isaac's name is listed as Isaiah. |

I'm not sure why Sophina is only releasing 106 acres. Catherine Johnson owned 200 acres in total, and William and Margaret released their right to 200 acres to James B. I know Sophina was deeded 50 acres as part of James B.'s estate settlement, and here she releases 106 acres, so we're missing any document where she released the other 44 acres. Since the land sold to A.D. Reed didn't given acreage, I'm guessing it's the 44 acres and she must have released it to James B. at some point without a deed being recorded..8 |

| Note | My theory that Mary may be the daughter of Alexander Smith and Sarah Dickson is based on the following: I have 2 fairly early sources for the name of James' wife, the Gentry Family in America by Richard Gentry (1909) and Footprints on the Sands of Time by Dr. A.B. Cox (1900). Dr. Cox, who would have known this family personally, gave her name as "Miss Mary Smith," while Richard Gentry, who received his information from an Ashe County Gentry contemporary to himself, listed her as "____ Dixon." I am supposing that both sources are in some way correct, i.e. that she was both a Smith and a Dickson. Normally, when siblings marry spouses with the same last name, those spouses are closely related. James Gentry's sister Elizabeth married James Smith (per Gentry Family in America). Now that James Smith appears to be the son of David Smith, son of Hugh. (see citation for that relationship.) So it follows that Mary wife of James is likely to be related to David Smith. Now I have only one list of David Smith's children, from the Heritage of Ashe County Vol 1. That list does include a Mary. It is possible that she could have been the widow of a Dickson before marrying James. However, I also discovered that David's brother Alexander Smith was married to Sarah Dickson, daughter of Thomas Dickson. Between 1807 and 1809, Alexander Smith petitioned the General Assembly of North Carolina for a divorce from his wife, formerly Miss Sarah Dickson, on the grounds that she had deserted the family in 1801. The record stated that the couple had five children, all daughters. In the 1800 Ashe Co census, Alexander Smith's household was 00001-31210. This corroborates the 5 daughters, although I don't know who the 6th young female would be. Possibly a daughter who died? David Smith's household consisted of 30010-21010. Now in 1810 the Ashe census included only first initials, but neither of the A. Smiths has a family anywhere close to the make-up of Alexander's. However, the D. Smith family is probably David's, except that it has extra girls beyond those that match 1800. 22001-42301. My guess is that Alexander may have moved away and his unmarried dauhters were added to David's family. Since I do not know the source of the list of David's children, I don't know whether it's possible that some of Alexander's children are included in that list. Thomas Dickson, father of Sarah, the runaway mother, wrote a will in 1813. In it he left $300 to his wife and three of his sons. He also left "to the girl Polly who lives with David Smith ... $25 and to my son John Dickson's two children ... $40 each ; to my son-in-law Alexandria Smith.. $10, and to Peter DIck who married my daughter Nancy ...$10." From the context, I would deduce that "the girl Polly" is a grandchild. Since his daughter Sarah married David's brother, it makes sense that the most logical granddaughter of his to live with David Smith would be a daughter of Alexander and Sarah. It's also possible that she was an illegitimate daughter of one of Thomas' other daughters, but then it makes less sense that she would live with David Smith.5,6,4,7,8,9,10 | |
