Fact 1 | Excerpts from The Jesse Greer Notebook "A Smawl Travail of Jesse Grear" "He was born the son of Benjamin and Nancy Grear in Wilkes County North Carolina on the 14th November 1778. Then traveled on to the years of maturity under a tender father and mother, and at 16 years old I left my Parents much against their will. Then serving the Devil was all my delight. Till the year 1800. Then married Polly Morris which was born a daughter of Henry and Franky Morris on the 17th September 1787. Then went on in the Gall of Bitterness as tho there was no Lord to save or to be lost. Til the year 1810 at the Baptism of Brother Benjamin. I Began to think that my soul must dwell with the rich man. Then I betook my self to trying to pray for about ten month. But the Devil purswaded me it was so hard that I could pray no longer. But betook myself to Cursing and swearing and drinking and all kinds of sin. Til the year 1814...we went to meeting to the Old feil meeting house but there was no ministry came to preach. But as they thought proper that they should sing and pray one of them began and as I set I saw a small child about twelve or thirteen year old crying as if she would break her heart. And it seamed to strike me like a clap of thunder to think that God was at work with such small children and I still in the gall of bitterness. Then I went home trying to pray, but it oppresed me that God would not hear my weak pertishion. I soon began to think that I had past the day of grace. I soon betook my self to my friends and to the people of God to see if they could give any consolation. But I had to go mourning through the wilderness until 1815. I had been from home and on my return home some hours in the night I thought if I was lost I would die a praying. And as I was trying to pray I thought that my Blessed Jesus meet with me and Bid me not fear. Then I went home Rejoicing and praising God that I had been lost but now was found...we was Received in to the Baptist Church and was Baptised on the 4th Sunday in June 1815." "The Birth and death of Benjamin Grear and Nancy Grear his wife, the daughter of John Wilcockson and Sary: Benjamin Grear the son of John Grear and Nancy was Born February the 9 in the year 1746, Deceased this life October the 23 in the year 1816, and Nancy Grear his wife was born May the 17 in the year 1745 and Deceased this life October the 3, 1790... Birth | circa 1765 | Alexander Johnson was born circa 1765. |
Marriage | 15 September 1790 | He married Frances Frankie Gambill, daughter of John Gambill and Caty ?Wash, on 15 September 1790 at Wilkes County, NC.1 |
Death | 21 March 1844 | Alexander Johnson died on 21 March 1844 at Ashe County, NC.2 |
Note | How do I know that these 10 are the children of Alexander and Franky? In 1957, Mr. Verl Weight, a researcher of the Cox families, published family Bible information in "The North Carolinian" for a family whose parents were not named. The 10 children in the Bible are these listed as Alexander's family. The first child is Elizabeth Johnson, born October 29, 1791. In Franky Johnson's widow's pension application, she stated that her first child, Elizabeth, was born on that date. Also, the ages of this list of children exactly fit those of Alexander Johnson's family in the 1800-1840 census. Finally, Franky Johnson is living in the 1850 census with a James Johnson whose age fits the James in the Bible, and that same James is later in the same household with a Catherine Johnson whose age fits the Catherine in the Bible.3 | |

Fact 1 | 23 September 1813 | On 23 September 1813, at Ashe County, NC,, Alexander Johnson bought from James Baker for $100, 250 acres, beginning on a ridge that divides Silas Branch from the River. Other landmarks manetioned are Esq Fletcher's line and the east side of Silas Branch. The deed was witnessed by Sam Cox and Zachariah Baker..13 |
Fact 1 | 6 March 1814 | On 6 March 1814, at Ashe County, NC,, Alexander Johnson bought from Samuel Cox, Sheriff 99 acres for 22 shillings 6 pence. The land was part of a 100 acre tract belonging to James Fletcher that was sold for taxes. The land was on the head of Cranberry Creek..14 |

Elizabeth is married to Henry Eller and is in his household. I suspect that John died, because the other older son is gone here and is not in his own household.15 |
Fact 1 | 15 November 1828 | On 15 November 1828, at Ashe County, NC,, Alexander Johnson sold to James Gentry 100 acres for $200 and 50 acres for $50. The 100 acre tract adjoined Silas Branch, Fletcher and Holeman. The 50 acre tract was on the north side of the New River at the mouth of Poison Branch. Census | 1830 | Alexander Johnson appeared on the census of 1830 at Ashe County, NC, as follows: 001100001-00021001 There is a HH for Edward Johnson 5 houses away from William who is probably Richard Edward. Mary is married to Jeremiah Baker and is in his HH. So these children are James, Jesse, Sarah, Catherine and Sookey.17 |
Fact 1 | 28 February 1831 | On 28 February 1831, at Ashe County, NC,, Alexander Johnson sold to Richard Gentry for $300, 100 acres adjoining Johnson and McMillan. It doesn't say "said Johnson," so I'm not sure if it means Alexander's own land or some other Johnson. Also no river or creek is mentioned..18 |
Census | 1840 | Alexander Johnson appeared on the census of 1840 at Ashe County, NC, as follows: 0100100001-010010001. I believe the 2 young children to be the 2 living with James and Franky in 1850. The 20-29-year old man is probably James (who would turn 30 in 1840) and the 20-29 year old woman is Sookey. Catherine is probably the 30-39 year old woman in the household with Henry and Elizabeth Eller (her sister). Sarah is married by now to William Weaver and is in his household. Jesse is in his own household.19 |
Fact 1 | 19 November 1840 | On 19 November 1840, at Ashe County, NC,, Alexander Johnson sold to Catherine Johnson for $200 two tracts of land on the waters of the South Fork of New River. The deed was witnessed by William Johnson and James Johnson. By a second deed on the same date, Alexander Johnson also sold to Catherine Johnson for $100, 50 acres described as "beginning on a white oak on the Rocky Branch on his old line running east 126 poles to a stake then south 65 poles to a stake then west 126 poles to a stake in the old line then to first station." John Gambill declares that Alexander Johnson came to his father's house on Roaring River and stayed all night and told of being on a tour in the Rev War; that he lived on the W side of the Blue Ridge on New River, now Ashe County. John Gambill signs the joint declaration. Sarah Stamper and Susannah Roberts sign by mark and the declaration made before John Gentry, J.P. ASHE County, N.C. 9 Sept 1854 came Franky Johnson, a respectable resident of Ashe County who declares she is the daughter of one John Gambill, deceased. She was born in Culpeper County, Va 8th January 1772 as told to her by her parents as she has no record of her age. Her said father moved to Wilkes County, N.C. during the Rev War & before the Battle of Kings Mountain; also states she is widow of Alexander Johnson, deceased; that she married said Johnson in Wilkes County, N.C. 15 September 1790 by William Hammons, a Baptist minister at home of her father, John Gambill, decd, by publishing of banns at church & does not believe there was any license for the marriage. Her declaration signed by mark before James Gambill, J.P. Heard said Alexander Johnson married Franky Gambill, dau of John Gambill, ca 1790. He himself was married 27 December 1796 and the Johnsons had two children at that time. The declaration was signed by his mark before James Gambill, J.P. On the 2 September 1783, No 1788 (or 4788) State of N.C. Also Nancy Gambill was 90 in the 1850 census of Ashe Co, NC, which would make it 1855 if she was 95.] .1 |
