John Gambill
b. between 1727 and 1735, d. after 1820
| Birth |
between 1727 and 1735 |
John Gambill was born between 1727 and 1735 at Hanover County, VA.3,4,5 |
|
|
He was the son of Henry Gambill and Mary Davenport.1,2 |
| Marriage |
circa 1769 |
John Gambill married Caty ?Wash circa 1769. |
| Death |
after 1820 |
John Gambill died after 1820.1,6 |
| Note |
|
I have four sources for the list of John and Caty's children: Franky Gambill Johnson's pension application, which names 5 of the children, a family group sheet from Dr. Louis Johnson, the William Perry Johnson piece, and two lists from volumes of Gambrella, one by Norman Spiva and the other by Alice Billings. The pension application names 4 daughters plus son John. The Spiva list has 7 children, which are the 5 from the application plus Henry and William. The other 3 lists also have Benjamin. According to the censuses of 1790 and 1800, there were 4 sons and at least 5 daughters (Franky was married in 1790 and 4 other daughters are shown in 1790 and 1800, plus 6 females are shown in 1787.) Having done no research on this myself, I'll accept the lists of the others for the 4 sons. We're still missing at least one daughter.7,8,1,5,9 |
| Fact 1 |
26 October 1777 |
On 26 October 1777, at Culpeper County, VA,, John Gambell leased 100 acres "during the natural lives of the said John Gambill, Caty Gambill and John Gambell Jr their son during the longest liver of them." (This from Deed Book H, page 790.) John Jr was a child, but I assume this was a tactic to increase the length of the lease by a generation..5 |
| Fact 1 |
3 March 1778 |
On 3 March 1778, at Culpeper County, VA,, John Gambill assigned the rights to his lease to Henry Howershall. Proven July 20, 1778..5 |
| Fact 1 |
30 December 1778 |
On 30 December 1778, at Wilkes County, NC,, John Gambill entered 100 acres on the middle fork of Roaring River above and including his improvement. (Entry #660). An entry was the first step in the process for obtaining a land grant. By this date, he'd evidently lived there long enough to have built something (an "improvement") on the property. He was not found on the personal property tax lists of Surry County, which is where this land was located before the formation of Wilkes County in 1778, for any of the years 1771-1777, but no list has survived for 1776 and the lists for 1775 and 1777 are incomplete, so it's possible he could have been in Surry Co for a few years before his entry. That would appear unlikely to me in light of the dates on his Culpeper lease..10,11 |

- [S59] Letter, Dr. Louis Johnson to Eddie Nikazy, 7/27/1990, all further sibling info from same source. Dr Johnson had a copy of a Bible record listing the names and dates of these children. It was from the North Carolinian,Vol III No 3, Sept 1957, submitted by Verl Weight. It listed all the children but not who their parents were. However, in Franky's Rev War widow pension app she states that her firstbirn was Elizabeth b Oct 29, 1791. And this list of Johnson children begins with an Elizabeth born on that date..
- [S59] Letter, Dr. Louis Johnson to Eddie Nikazy, 7/27/1990, Dr Johnson refers to The North Carolinian Vol 3 #3 Sept 1957. Number 11. Page 339. A Cox/Johnson family Bible submittet by Verl Weight. It gives the names and dates of all the Johnson children but doesn't name Alexander as their father. He also refers to Mrs Willie Cox, Piney Creek, NC as the other source for the family group sheet naming these children as belonging to Alexander and Franky. Mrs Cox must also be the source for the names of spouses..
