Death |
between 1709 and 1712 |
Nicholas Gentry died between 1709 and 1712 at New Kent County, VA.1 |
Note |
|
Per Bill Gentry:
"Samuel was the son of Nicholas Gentry the immigrant, who lived most of his life in Virginia along the banks of Totopotomoy Creek on the south side of the Pamunkey River in what was New Kent Co during most of his lifetime , then was divided to form Hanover Co. I have frequently seen references to Lucy Cornelius being the wife of Nicholas, and some references go further and say she was his second wife. I regard this as completely unreliable and based on someone's wishful thinking in filling out on LDS chart. There is no evidence that I know of as to the identity of his wife. If anything I would guess that she may have been a daughter of DAvid Crawford who was a neighbor of Nicholas, and this may have led to the great proliferation fo the name Daivd among the early Gentrys. In the listing of St Peter's Parrish where Nicholas lived, there is no mention of any Cornelius which makes me further discount this naming."2 |

- The following is the source for the name William Lewis Hash. There is no other documentation for this name that I know of.
Date: Mon, 17 May 1999 22:43:32 -0800 From: Richard O. Johnson<e-mail address > To: e-mail address Message-Id: Subject: Old John's wives: source of info Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
Pat Burris replied to my comments about the sources for saying old John's wife was Rebecca Anderson as follows (posting to the list with her permission):
The Mrs. Cox referred to re: Rebecca Anderson is Jessie Gambil Cox Moore, well-known Grayson Historian, who is being laid to rest this very afternoon in the Potato Creek Cemetery in Grayson County [age 91].
Mrs. Moore obtained a copy of the Hash/Daniels papers and made a number of additions/deletions. I have seen a number of her references to Rebecca Anderson as the wife of "Old John." When I first asked her about this - probably 20+ years ago - she could not locate her source, but she was sure of her data.
What I do have - and I'm sure "Aunt Jessie" had the same information, is a photocopy of a very old handwritten document, the original of which was handed down through the Hash family to Dennis Hash, son of Abram Hash & Sallie Ward. This document begins: "A story of the Hash Family generations, settling in South-Western part of Colonial Virginia, before Virginia was made a state. William Lewis Hash came across Atlantic with family, landing on the Jersey shore, thence through Pennsylvania and moving on to settle in southwestern Virginia. Land grants were taken and settlements were made to the following sons: William Hash I born 1736 married Ellender Osborne, dau. of Ephraim Osborne [1] Josephat Hash m. Margaret "Peggy" Halsey, from New Jersey [2] John Hash m. [1] Elizabeth Sturgeon and [2] Rebecca Anderson [3] Robert James [called Bobby] married _________ [4] Thomas m.Nealia Phipps [5] William m. Nancy Anderson, sister to Rebecca Anderson, Jno.s wife There is a reference that some of this information [perhaps all, I've no
way of knowing] was taken from "Blind Billy's Bible."
It has been my understanding that this info. was handed down from Josephat>Abram>Dennis, etc. and that Dennis updated the data to include his generation, etc.
I tend to believe this document, but this is just my opinion. I cannot give any more "Proof" than anyone else can at this point. We, in Grayson, have a tendency to believe info. that came, as we say, "from the horse's mouth."
