Cynthia Moore married Robert Goodson on 3 October 1839 at Floyd County, VA.1 |
Note |
|
From Irene Underwood: "Here's what I have on the Robert Goodson, Cynthia Moore Marriage: Robert Goodson, b. Sept. 4, 1819, Montgomery Co., VA, d. May 16, 1864, Floyd Co., VA, married Cynthia Moore, b. abt. 1819, Franklin Co., VA, d. ??, daughter of William Moore and Rebecca (?Hite Smith). marriage on Ssept. 30, 1839. (Floyd County Marriage Bk. 2, pg. 132. Min: George Godby) Robert Goodson did not follow in the footsteps of his relatives and forebears in terms of the legal profession. While the family had established a reputation for their participation in the judicial system as sheriffs, clerk of court, etc., Robert chose to participate as a horse thief. He stole a horse, was captured, and several of his cousins made a false key and helped him to escape from jail. Then the county had to pay extra to have him guarded round the clock (which they resented). He served a year in jail (during the 1850 census when Cynthia lived with George Goodson, one of the ones who helped get the false key to him.).2 "

Abraham? Moore
b. between 1805 and 1810
Birth |
between 1805 and 1810 |
Abraham? Moore was born between 1805 and 1810. |
|
|
He was the son of William Moore and Rebecca Swinney. |
Note |
|
The son b 1805-1810 is probably Abraham Moore. His marriage to Martha Boyd in April 1834 was performed by the same minister (Stephen Hubbard) who married several of these others (Martha, WIlson and Judith). Also, the family was very much connected to the Boyds. Leatha married a Boyd and a Boyd was the bondsman for Martha's marriage license, plus two of William Moore's deeds listed Boyds as adjoining landowners. |
Leatha Moore1
b. between 1805 and 1810
Birth |
between 1805 and 1810 |
Leatha Moore was born between 1805 and 1810. |
|
|
She was the daughter of William Moore and Rebecca Swinney. |
Marriage |
27 December 1836 |
Leatha Moore married John Jackson Boyd, son of William Boyd, on 27 December 1836 at Floyd County, VA.2 |
Note |
|
Mike Haynes, a descendant, reached the conclusion that his Leatha/Leathie who married Jackson Boyd, is the daughter of William and Rebecca based on a number of clues, among which are
The Boyd she married was part of a family that lived on Shooting Creek, near where William and Rebecca lived. The marriage bond for her marriage was signed by William Moore Family tradition has it that she had a sister Polly who married a Graham Family tradition has it that she lived for a time in Asheville, NC [could be really Ashe Co NC] Family tradition has it that there was a family connection to the Joneses, that maybe her mother was a Jones. Her age varies from one census to the next, but in at least one census it is consistent with the daughter William Moore had in 1810 and 1820 who has not been identified until now. Leathie named one of her sons Wilson.
She and John lived in Patrick County at one time, so the relative she'd have been physically closest to would have been sister Judy ELizabeth who married Reuben Jones and lives in Patrick County. If she did have an Ashe County connection that would fit with Mary Moore Graham, who ended up in Ashe County
Marriage bond dated 12/27/1836 Floyd Co VA starts know all men by these presents that we John Boyd and William Boyd are held and firmly bound....etc..then names marrying couple as John Boyd and Lethia Moor. The signatures are then John Boyd and William Moore, both say "his mark". So whoever wrote this document for these folks I think messed up in the top part or the bottom part, i.e. it was probably either William Moore or William Boyd and not both. The witness to the signatures was W. Goodson.
Per Email from Mike on 12/31/01 he went to a family reunion and mentioned William and Rebecca Moore as being the parents of Leathy. He said "one of the local family members who keeps track of the family legends told me that she had heard the name Rebecca Sweeney in relation to our family, but did not know where it fit in."1 |

Judy Moore
b. circa 1805, d. between 1850 and 1858
Birth |
circa 1805 |
Judy Moore was born circa 1805 at Franklin County, VA.1 |
|
|
She was the daughter of William Moore and Rebecca Swinney. |
Death |
between 1850 and 1858 |
Judy Moore died between 1850 and 1858 at Patrick County, VA.2 |
Note |
|
Why I believe Judy is the daughter of William and Rebecca. (1) A Wiliam Moore was the bondsman for her marriage. (2) There was only one William Moore in the personal property tax lists between 1818 and 1834. That same William was on the tax lists as located at Shooting Creek. One of his deeds mentioned a wife Becca. (3) Judy's family moved to Ashe Co, NC along with other family members, including Rebecca, soon after Judy died in Patrick County. (4) The marriages of Martha, Judy and Wilson were all performed by the same minister. (5) Family tradition among the Ashe County Jones family was that Judy was the daughter of "Billy Moore." |
(Witness) Fact 1 |
1 December 1868 |
On 1 December 1868, at Ashe County, NC,, Wilson G. Moore was appointed admnistrator of the estate of Elizabeth Jones, deceased, "the next of kin having removed." There are two Elizabeth Joneses whom this could have been. First, Reuben Jones, the husband of Wilson's sister Judy, married an Elizabeth after Judy's death. Elizabeth was his wife in the 1860 census, but by the 1870 census his wife was Rebecca, so we know that Elizabeth did die in the 1860's. But Reuben was right there in the 1870 census, so I can think of no reason it would say "the next of kin having removed." Also since her spouse was still living, I don't think a married woman would have an estate to admnister, since all property was owned in the name of her husband. The more likely Elizabeth Jones is the one William Moore was living with in the census of 1850 and 1860 in Floyd County, VA. There is evidence that William came to NC before 1867, because of the paper signed by him and dated that year in the Graham family papers. Elizabeth could have moved to NC with him and died there. Since she was unmarried, any assets she had would have needed to be taken care of in case of her death..3 |
