Joseph Shue
b. circa 1785, d. between 1860 and 1865

Father Joseph Shuh1 b. before 1761, d. between 1816 and 1817
Mother "Nip" (most likely Margaret) Snarr b. circa 1757, d. before 1801
Pedigree

Last Edited 27 Aug 2005

Birth circa 1785  Joseph Shue was born circa 1785 at ? most likely Shenandoah Co, VA.2
He was the son of Joseph Shuh and "Nip" (most likely Margaret) Snarr.1
Marriage 1807  Joseph Shue married Elizabeth Holtz, daughter of John Holtz and Blandina Shuh, in 1807.
Death between 1860 and 1865  Joseph Shue died between 1860 and 1865 at Hocking County, OH.
Note   There are records listed here for Joseph Shue in 4 different locations, (1) Joseph the son of Joseph who died in Shenandoah in 1817, (2) Joseph in Augusta County in the 1810 and 1820 censuses and St. John's Church records, (3) Joseph in Montgomery Co in the 1830 census and Zion Church records and (4) Joseph in Hocking Co, OH in the 1840 and 1850 census. The ages of the whole family in the last 3 cases match up, the wife is named Elizabeth in all 3 cases, and the names and ages of the children in Hocking County eactly match children baptised in both Montgomery County and Augusta County. Also, there were an Elizabeth and Catherine who were married in Floyd County (after it was split off from Montgomery in 1831) whose ages matched those of the Elizabeth and Catherine baptised in Augusta, and a Sarah Shue who was married in Hocking county whose age matched that of the Sarah baptised in Augusta.
The case of the first Joseph in Shenandoah cannot be proven as easily. The only evidence tying the Augusta Joseph to Joseph Sr as father is that the son of Joseph Sr never showed up in Shenandoah tax lists, and therefore is likely to have moved on down the valley. Plus Joseph Sr had a son named Jacob also, who also did not show up in Shenandoah in the tax lists. Joseph in Augusta was the sponsor for the baptism of the child of a Jacob Shue. In addition, Joseph of Shenandoah was missing from the personal property tax lists of Shenandoah Countybetween 1795 and 1800. A Joseph Shue was listed in Rockingham County in exactly those years. Rockingham is the county between Shenandoah and Augusta. I assume that when Joseph Sr moved back to Shenandoah, Joseph Jr was old enough to remain behind in Rockingham and move on down to Augusta. That Weiss Church where he was confirmed in 1806 is near the Augusta/Rockingham County line, so Joseph Sr's family could have lived near there during their years in Rockingham. Finally, the strongest evidence is the association with the family of John Holtz. Since Holtz's first wife appears to have been Landenia Shuh, sister of Joseph Sr, Joseph Shue Jr. was a first cousin to Elizabeth Holtz, whom he married.
Name Variation   Joseph Shue was also known as Joseph Shew or Shoe.
Fact 1 23 March 1806  On 23 March 1806, at (near the Augusta Co line), Rockingham County, VA,, Joseph Schuh was on Rev. Braun's list of confirmations at the Weiss Congregation. No ages were given for the people on this list, but a list of confirmations at another church in 1801 listed 15 people, ages between 14 and 31, though most were between 18-22. The Weiss Church was at Bridgewater, near the Augusta/Rockingham County line..3,4
Fact 1 1807  In 1807, at Augusta County, VA,, The first mention of Joseph Shue in St. John's records was when he was listed as one of the communicants for an unknown date in 1807. Elizabeth Holtz was also on the list..5
Fact 1 between 1807 and 1821  Between 1807 and 1821, at Augusta County, VA,, Joseph Shew (same spelling in all years) was listed for personal property taxes. Some of the lists were were faint and difficult to read, but he was listed at least every other year during this period. I checked back to 1796 and up through 1827 and did not find him listed before 1807 or after 1821. In 1810, 1813 and 1814 there was also a Jacob Shew..6
(Witness) Fact 1 5 July 1807  On 5 July 1807, at Augusta County, VA,, Jackub and Eva Schuhe had their son Johannes baptised. The sponsors were Joseph Schuhe and Elizabeth Holtz..7
Census 1810  Joseph Shue appeared on the census of 1810 at Augusta County, VA, as follows: 10100-10100.8
Fact 1 between 1810 and 1819  Between 1810 and 1819, at Augusta County, VA,, Both Joseph and Elizabeth Schuhe were on the St. John's communicants lists in most years. In August 1823 there was a Joseph Schui. There was no Elizabeth and a Henry Shui was also listed. I know there were Shuey families in Augusta County, so it's likely these are not our Shues..9
Census 1820  Joseph Shue appeared on the census of 1820 at Augusta County, VA, as follows: Joseph Shew 100010-21010.10
Fact 1 between 1823 and 1830  Between 1823 and 1830, at Montgomery County, VA,, Joseph Shoe was listed for personal property taxes..11
Fact 1 8 August 1826  On 8 August 1826, at Montgomery (now Floyd) County, VA,, Joseph Shew purchased an unmentioned number of acres for $200, from Jonathan and Mary Graham on the waters of the Little River, adjoining John Wadkins, Goodson, Thomas Goodson, Jr, and Banks. The deed was witnessed by George Shelor, Jacob Graham, Giles Graham and Jacob Graham, Jr..12
Fact 1 between 1827 and 1832  Between 1827 and 1832, at Floyd County, VA,, Jospeh Shuh (or Schu or Schuh) and wife Elizabeth had three children baptised at the Zion Lutheran Church, which is just outside the town of Floyd, VA..13
Census 1830  Joseph Shue appeared on the census of 1830 at Montgomery County, VA, as follows: Joseph Shew 1001001-2311001.14
Fact 1 between 1831 and 1834  Between 1831 and 1834, at Floyd County, VA,, Joseph Shoe or Shew was listed for personal property taxes. Floyd County did not exist until 1831, when it was formed from Montgmery. ( I have ordered the tax film for Montgomery County for the 1820s but it is on back order. ) I checked through 1847 and did not find him again. A Jacob Shue was listed in 1841 only..15
Fact 1 20 September 1831  On 20 September 1831, at Hocking County, OH,, Somebody named Joseph Schuh (even spelled that way, which I've never seen outside of the Lutheran Church) "of Fairfield County," bought land from John and Elizabeth Iles for $300, which was described as "the west half of the northwest quarter of section four of township fourteen of range seventeen." On Sept 22, 1834 a deed was recorded by which Joseph Shoe and wife Mary sold land with the same description to Henry Durr for $475, with the additional description that it contained 89 and 55/100 acres. The date within the body of the deed was January 2, 1830, which had to have been a mistake by the recording clerk. I do not know who this Joseph Schuh was. It could not have been Joseph born 1785, because he was resident of Floyd Co, VA through 1834, and had a wife named Elizabeth both before and after this time period. It is very unlikely that it was Joseph's son Joseph, because he was born in 1813 and therefore unlikely to have $300 to buy land at the age of 18 in 1831. No Joseph Shoe/Shue/Schuh was listed in the 1830 census of either Fairfield or Hocking County. I'm guessing that this Joseph was the son of one of the brothers of Joseph b 1785, whom I have not tracked. Hs presence in the area was likely the reason for Joseph and Elizabeth to chose Hocking County as a place to move..
Fact 1 24 November 1834  On 24 November 1834, at Floyd County, VA,, Joseph and Elizabeth Shue sold for $350, 140 acres on the waters of the Little River adjoining John Watkins, Goodson, Thomas Goodson, and Banks. There were no witnesses listed. Elizabeth was examined privately and agreed to release her dower right..16
Fact 1 11 April 1835  On 11 April 1835, at Hocking County, OH,, Joseph Shue "of Perry County" bought, for $100, 80 acres from John and Matilda Shern, defined as the east part of the southwest quarter of Section 16, Townshhip 13, Range 16. Perry County adjoins Hocking; Joseph and Elizabeth must have been living there for a short period of time after they arrived in Ohio from Virginia..17
Census 1840  Joseph Shue appeared on the census of 1840 at Hocking County, OH, as follows: 01100001-00110001.18
Fact 1 17 April 1849  On 17 April 1849, at Green Township, Hocking County, OH,, Joseph Shue, Charles Young (his son-in-law), and Sylvester Prudeau, directors of School district No. 8, signed a lease for a part of section 16, township 13 of range 16 for purpose of a school house..19
Census 1850  Joseph Shue appeared on the census of 1850 at Green Twp, Hocking County, OH, as follows: Joseph Shoe 65 farmer b VA
Elizabeth 64 b MD
Roseanna 28 b VA
Matilda 20 b VA
Jacob 18 b VA
Next Household
John Shoe 23 labor b VA
Elizabeth 18 b Delaware
Note that this is the Matilda, Jacob and Johannes who were baptised at Zion Lutheran Church; the ages are an exact match.2
Fact 1 4 October 1858  On 4 October 1858, at Hocking County, OH,, Joseph Shue and wife Elizabeth sold, for $135, 10 acres out of their tract of land to William Woodruff. Joseph signed his name but Elizabeth signed with her mark. Elizabeth was interviewed separately and released her right to the property..20
Census 1860  Joseph Shue appeared on the census of 1860 at Green Twp, Hocking County, OH, as follows: Joseph Shoe 74 farmer RE $800 Pp $135 b VA
Elizabeth 72 b MD
Roseanna 38 birthplace ditto.21

Fact 1 24 November 1860  On 24 November 1860, at Hocking County, OH,, This deed is confusing, so I'm just going to quote parts of it. "Whereas Daniel Frisner did on the 9th day of June AD 1858 by the consideration of Isaac Everatt an acting Justice of the Peace within and for Green Township in the county of Hocking ... recover a Judgment against John Shue and Joseph Shue for the sum of $139.85 [hard to read; this is my best guess as to the amount] and $2.00 cost of suit, and whereas afterwards and on the 29th day of July AD 1858 at the instance of the said D. Friesner an execution was issued by said Justice of the Peace directed to any constable of said Township commanding him that of the goods and chattels of the said John Shue and Joseph Shue he cause to be made the amount of the said judgment and costs and which execution came duly to the hands of P. Rizer a constable of said Green Township o be executed, and such proceedings were legally had on said execution that the same was to be executed on the 24th day of August AD 1860 returned by said constable indorsed "the goods or chattels whereon to levy," and whereas afterwards, and on the sixth day of January AD 1859 the said Daniel Frisner caused to be filed int he office of the Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas of said Hocking County a duly certified transcript of the said judgment of the said Justice of the Peace....directed to the Sheriff of said Hocking County commanding him that out of the goods and chattels and for the want thereof, then out of the lands and tenements of the John Shue and Joseph Shue he cause to be made the judgment and costs aforesaid.... Upon the 29th day of January AD 1859 the said Sheriff levied the same upon the following lands in said Hocking County as the property of Joseph Shue to wit: the east half of the south west quarter of Section Number sixteen Township number thirteen Range number sixteen, containing eighty acres, except ten acres off of the north west corner sold to W.H. Woodruff....that on the 15th day of September AD 1860 the said William M. Davey as such Sheriff by virtue of said last named writ duly offered at public auction the said lands...as the property of Joseph Shue, having first given notice of the time and place of said sale by advertisement published for five weeks prior thereto in the Hocking Sentinel...and sold the same to William H Woodruff for the sum of six hundred and sixty seven dollars, which was duly returned to the said court at its October term 1860....... Recorded Dec 18, 1860..22
