Marriage | James Kidwell married Elizabeth ?.
Note | We know Mary Elizabeth's parents were James and Elizabeth Kidwell of Aleandria. At least her death certificate and the 1850 census stated that she was from Alexandria or the District of Columbia. Later censuses just said Virginia, but by then Alexandria was back in Virginia. There was a couple in Fairfax County named James and Elizabeth (Blackburn) Kidwell, but I can find no record of them living in Alexandria. Also that James left a will in 1854 naming his children, and Elizabeth was not one of them. There was at the same time a James Kidwell in the 1820 and 1830 census in Alexandria. There was a baptism record of a son Isaac to James and Elizabeth Kidwell in St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Old Town Alexandria in 1826, so this may be evidence that the James in Alexandria was also married to an Elizabeth. The Alexandria James Kidwell had a daughter in the 1830 census who was listed as 10-15, even though our Mary Elizabeth should have been 5-10. I wonder if she lied about her age all those years, because she was married in 1836, making her a very young bride if she was really born in 1822-1825. Or of course the census-taker could easily have made a mistake. The James Kidwell in Alexandria moved around a lot; one of his addresses was within a block of the Henry and Louisa Hobb residence. Based on all the above, I am assuming until I find anything to the contrary that the James Kidwell in Alexandria was Mary Elizabeth's father.
Census | 1820 | James Kidwell appeared on the census of 1820 at Alexandria, District of Columbia, as follows: 300010-11011.1 |
Fact 1 | between 1821 and 1840 | Between 1821 and 1840, at Alexandria, District of Columbia,, The personal property/land tax lists for Alexandria are not indexed or alphabetized, but are by street address. They are difficult to read and it's very hard to find a person if you do not know their address. I found James Kidwell listed for Personal property taxes as follows: 1821 Fairfax near Gibbon renting from Hartshorn estate 1822 Wolfe near Water renting from Robert Kirk estate 1823 Duke and Alley between Union and Water renting from Horace Field 1824 seems to be the same general location as 1823 but renting from John Potton 1825 I could not find him 1826 near Janney and Preston Lumberyard on Wolfe 1827 Water St near Wolfe renting from Geo Chapman estate 1828 There was a Thomas Kidwell near Henry Hobb (In Reynolds house) renting from Fielder Lucketts. This is the only time I found Thomas Kidwell. I wonder if it's a mistake or another name for James. Could not find James. 1829 Fairfax St 7 doors from Reynolds/Hobb renting from Sally Edmonds 1830 Water near Strand renting from Lawrence Lewis 1831-1835 I could not find him in Ward 1 (that's where all the above are.) In 1834 I also checked Ward 3 and in 1835 I went through all 4 wards, but I could have missed him. Or he could have moved outside the city limits. 1836 Fayette near King (3rd Ward) renting from Harrison Taylor 1837 King near Fayette (3rd Ward) renting from A.E. Cazemore 1838 Third Ward renting from Thos Preston 1839-1840 3rd Ward renting from Frank Peyton's estate 1841 not found.2 |
